Swim Club Heading into Second Year
The first year of the Friends and Families of McCauley Society’s kid’s swim club has been a great success! The program started in September of 2014 and ran until the pool closed for the FIFA tournament at the end of May 2015. We had between 10 and 15 kids over this period with 10 of them coming consistently. Kids attended swim meets with Penguin Swimming and did well.
Love’s Gentle Flow
In love’s gentle flow, we are like water and rocks Intertwined in nature’s timeless paradox Your love, a steady stream, carving paths through my soul Smooth as river stones, where true emotions can roll Your presence a calm harbor, amidst the raging sea A sanctuary of peace, where I find solace endlessly Together we can weather life’s storms like rugged cliffs Strong and unyielding, against nature’s shifts

Goals
This is my last column for the York News-Times, and all I can say is, what an experience! I’m very grateful for this opportunity and the chance to get my foot in the door of the journalism world. Thank you to my family, friends and community members for reading my work and for all of the positive feedback.Since this is my last column, and my beginning of “adulting,” I figured there is nothing more fitting than to share a list of goals that I have for myself, in no particular order.
Sisterhood
Coming up with topics to write on is really hard for me at times. I’m not sure if I struggle because my life isn’t exciting enough, I don’t notice everything around me for inspiration, or maybe because all my life I have always been told what to write about in school.
The changing of youth sports
This summer has been the least busy I have ever been with sports, which has actually been really nice. Therefore, I have had the opportunity to watch my younger siblings compete in baseball, softball, soccer and wrestling. We got back from vacation about a month ago and haven't had an evening at home because of someone having an event each night. It has honestly been a crazy month and I am just looking forward to being able to eat home cooked meals in July again.

For the love of pets
Pets are a staple in almost everyone’s household. Studies have shown that pets lower our blood pressure, as well as bring happiness, laughter, compassion and joy to people of all ages. Throughout my life I have been fortunate enough to own many pets; some who I loved and some who I have not missed.
Mixed feelings
Woah, it’s my last Wednesday in York High School...or high school for that matter. I think I’m in a bit of denial that high school is going to be officially over in two days. I never really believed everyone when they said, “it will be the fastest four years of your life,” but they were absolutely right! My graduation invites have been sent, the party is planned, and the cap and gown fits.
An open letter to the common gun owner:
I see where you are coming from, I really do. I come from a liberal family and in small-town Nebraska that means I am definitely the minority, so I hear you loud and clear. You feel that your rights to own a firearm are being tampered with because of gun violence that isn’t your fault. So naturally, you defend your rights about owning a gun and fight the current stricter gun control push.
The guilty pleasure of The Bachelor
I don’t know why, but I still find myself wasting my time watching The Bachelor every Monday. For those of you who have not seen the show, I will quickly explain. Around 20-25 women go to California to date “The Bachelor.” The couples go on unrealistic dates in many different countries around the world. The bachelor then has to slowly whittle away at the group of singles by sending some home.
Spray tans and bunions
It’s February, which means things are starting to get real. My graduation invitations arrived last week, which means my high school days are coming to an end.It is surreal to think that I will be graduating in 95 days.I still remember my first day of kindergarten and walking up to Campbell Elementary School in Lincoln, wearing the black and pink backpack on my back that was literally almost as tall as me.
I don’t do resolutions
We are days out from ringing in the new year and from all of the flip-grams, collages, tweets and New Year’s resolutions. I enjoy seeing all of the posts on social media (to an extent) and like everyone’s overall hopeful thinking about what 2018 will bring. We are just over a week into 2018 and it seems that people are already starting to slip or quit on their resolution(s). I do not believe in making New Year’s resolutions. Call me a pessimist, but I am proud to be a nonbeliever.

I recently went and saw the current major motion picture, Wonder. For those of you who haven’t seen the movie or read the book, here is a quick synopsis. Wonder is about a ten-year-old boy named August (Auggie) Pullman, who has major facial deformities. Because of his unfortunate condition, it has been hard for Auggie to make friends. A few of his classmates at his new school are cruel and often make scathing comments about him.

In celebration of November and Thanksgiving, I thought it would only be fitting to express my gratitude for all of the good things life has brought me thus far.I try to be thankful all of the time, not just in November, but at times I find myself expecting too much and acting entitled. I don’t mean to act this way.
On and off the field
By the time this column will be published, my high school softball season will be over, and I will undoubtedly still be emotional. I’m hoping the emotion will be that of pure happiness from winning a state championship, but nonetheless, it will be a feeling of pride in all that my team has accomplished over the past four years.I have taken some time to reflect not only on my high school career, but my softball career as a whole. Softball has had a significant impact on me as a person and athlete.
What am I doing?
I have actually been asking myself this question a lot lately. What am I actually doing with my life? More like, what am I actually going to do with my life? I have been feeling pressure to pick a college. Pressure from myself, as well as pressure from others in my life. I don’t believe all pressure is bad, as it is positive in this case, but it is pressure nonetheless.A few days ago someone asked me, “Are you ready to be an adult?” This question made me cringe. How could I be?
