Laser remote-fusion cutting with solid-state lasers
A laser remote cutting process is analyzed, which differs significantly from established laser cutting processes. On the one hand, no cutting gas is needed and a high working distance is realized. On the other hand-in opposite to conventional laser remote cutting-sheets of metal with thicknesses above 1 mm can be cut in one step.
3D-steering and superfocusing of second-harmonic radiation through plasmonic nano antenna arrays
Second-harmonic generation (SHG) of light at nanoparticles provides the possibility to generate light (of a desired frequency) in-situ instead of introducing it by focusing an external light beam. Our theoretical study provides steering SHG light through the superposition of the radiation from a number of nanoparticles which are arranged in a circle. The authors assume cone-shaped or rod-shaped nanoparticles. Their radiation can be modeled as radiating dipoles.
Surface effect on the electrical and optical properties of barium titanate at room temperature
The surface effect on the electrical and optical properties of tetragonal barium titanate at room temperature is investigated theoretically by using a microscopic model based on the orbital approximation in correlation with the dipole-dipole interaction. Both the first-, second-, and third-order electronic polarizabilities were considered in this calculation in order to obtain accurate results for both the spontaneous polarization and refractive indices.
Local dielectric and polarization properties of inner and outer interfaces in PZT thin films
We report on novel approaches using scanning force methods [i.e. piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM), Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) and pull-off force spcctroscopy (PFS)] in order to deduce the local dielectric and polarization properties of PZT thin films both at outer and inner interfaces with a lateral resolution <50 nm.
Optical and structural properties of Langmuir-Blodgett films at the air/water and the air/solid interface
We report on novel investigations on non-linear optical 2-docosylamino-5-nitropyridine (DCANP) Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films by means of polarization, second harmonic and scanning force microscopy (SFM). Direct optical measurements at the air/water interface showed the molecules to reorient when depositing a LB film onto a solid substrate by the Langmuir-Blodgett method.
Status and future aspects in nanoscale surface inspection of ferroics by scanning probe microscopy
The unbroken need of nanoscale characterisation methods for ferroelectric and ferroelastic materials unambiguously points towards the use and implementation of scanning probe instruments (SPM).
Approaching the liquid/air interface with scanning force microscopy
Scanning force microscopy at both the air/solid and the liquid/solid interface is very common and understood accurately. Here we demonstrate that the scanning force microscope (SFM) is capable of investigating even at the liquid/air interface, i.e., the surface of a Langmuir film floating on the water subphase.
Ferroelastic control of magnetic domain structure: Direct imaging by magnetic force microscopy
Pyrrhotite Fe7S8 provides an example of exceptionally strong magnetoelastic coupling through pinning of ferromagnetic domains by ferroelastic twins.

569 Update and Audit of Cardiac Multidisciplinary Team Meeting Documentation
Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) meetings are a mainstay of current clinical practice. A “Heart Team” approach is endorsed by major cardiac societies for complex patients. Effective and accurate documentation is an essential component of these meeting. We undertook to update the documentation of the cardiac MDT in a regional tertiary institute, to reflect contemporary electronic medical record keeping.

Quantitative and nanoscale surface potential tracking of ionic and organic adsorbates at sub-monolayer coverage
We use an improved setup for deducing quantitative surface potential values by means of frequency modulated Kelvin-probe force microscopy (FM-KPFM). This method is sensitive to the electrostatic force gradient rather than the absolute force probed in KPFM so far, and therefore provides both a higher lateral resolution and quantitative values. Furthermore, FM-KPFM allows using cantilevers with high spring constants which even favors both the stability and increased topographic resolution.
Stress induced movement of ferroelastic domain walls in BaTiO3 single crystals evaluated by scanning force microscopy
We report on the quantitative investigation of lateral domain wall motion in BaTiO3 single crystals subjected to a compressive unidirectional mechanical stress. Simultaneous to the mechanical testing, the single crystals prepared by the modified exaggerated growth method were characterized by scanning force microscopy and piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) which allow both topographical details and the true three-dimensional ferroelectric domain configuration to be reproduced simultaneously.
