Montana Climate Matters: Impacts on Wildlife in the Treasure State
Ecologists understand that each species occupies a ‘niche’ in the environment where the right living conditions (defined by temperature and moisture), resources (including food, water, and shelter), and lack of competition from other species allow populations to survive and reproduce. Plants grow where conditions are right, and animals depend upon plant communities to provide food and shelter. A niche is a ‘space’ in the world that a species has adapted to over its whole history.

'User groups' shouldn't be the only consideration
The Custer-Gallatin Forest Plan Revision is nearing completion, and with it the fate of many vulnerable wildlife species and even the health of the ecosystem. The Daily Chronicle has published many opinions regarding the decisions to be made by this process. A recurring theme is the notion that somehow the Gallatin Forest Partnership has the best answer because it represents a group agreement reached by a wide spectrum of user groups. User is an interesting word in this regard.
Wilderness is not something to be traded away
So what brought you to Montana? Judging from the rapid growth of Gallatin County’s population, lots of folks are moving here. Some come just for jobs, or to be close to family, but a large percentage of people move here for the outdoor lifestyle. This is no secret yet bears repeating. Montana’s outdoor economy annually generates $2.2 billion in wages, $7.1 billion in consumer spending and 71,000 jobs. People want wild places to go and unwind, to experience the real Earth.
