How to Create Your Plate
See how to fill your plate the healthy way The Diabetes Plate Method is based on a 9-inch-diameter plate and helps keep portion sizes in check. Remember to focus on lots of nonstarchy vegetables, which are usually available as raw veggies for dips and in side dishes. Starchy foods are typically plentiful at the holidays with bread, potatoes, pie, stuffing/dressing, pasta dishes, cookies, and more on display.
Healthy Grocery List
Here are some basic grocery items that will help you put together healthy meals at home.
Snacks and Desserts

For good nutrition, choose healthful snacks that help you get some of the food groups you may be missing, such as vegetables, fruit, and healthful fats. Fruit, yogurt, and whole-wheat crackers are healthful snacks that contain carbohydrate.
Foods for Your Plate
The plate method shows you the overall sections of the plate: Nonstarchy vegetables, Grain/starchy vegetables, and Protein, with Fruit, Dairy, and healthy fats on the side. Within each section, there is a wide array of specific foods that you can enjoy. Here are a few examples. Generally, nonstarchy vegetables have about 5 grams of carbohydrate in a 1/2 cup cooked or 1 cup raw serving. They are full of vitamins, minerals, and fiber and have very few calories.

After learning about the three main sections of the plate method, take a look at the fat you use. To lower your risk of heart disease, try to eat less saturated and trans fat—the unhealthy fats. At the same time, you can protect your heart by eating more mono and polyunsaturated fats including omega-3s—the healthy fats. Fats are useful during the cooking of foods and also make satisfying toppers—think oil-based salad dressings or a light sprinkling of toasted nuts on a baked dish.
