3. Results 3.1. Root Injury Assessment Both resistant and susceptible genotypes experienced feeding damage by WCR (AAPF treatment, Appendix A, Figure A1 and Figure A2). We found that the WCR-susceptible genotype had higher root damage in both experiments compared to the resistant genotype (Appendix A, Figure A1 and Figure A2). Drought had no influence on WCR damage for the greenhouse experiment (Appendix A, Figure A2).
Abstract Host plant range is arguably one of the most important factors shaping microbial communities associated with insect herbivores. However, it is unclear whether host plant specialization limits microbial community diversity or to what extent herbivores sharing a common host plant evolve similar microbiomes.
Abstract Substantial efforts to characterize the structural and functional diversity of soil, plant and insect-associated microbial communities have illuminated the complex interacting domains of crop-associated microbiomes that contribute to agroecosystem health. As a result, plant-associated microorganisms have emerged as an untapped resource for combating challenges to agricultural sustainability.
