What was your first job as a journalist?

I was ad production manager at Runners World, 1981-1987, In 1983, I wrote a piece on Don Bowden, first US man to go under 4 minutes in mile.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Oh yes, from 1972-1984

How is social media changing news?

Social media is the tree of knowledge of good and evil. I manage sixteens social media sites with buffer.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

That is a tough one. Holden Caulfield.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

For me, I wake up each day, wanting to write and tell the stories of the world.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

My brother manages my tools and software at runblogrun. It allows me to focus on writing and marketing.

What's your favorite social network?

It was X, or twitter, now FB.

Who do you wish followed you?

Editor at Financial times.

Why did you become a journalist?

I was working at Runners World and I talked my way into writing short pieces while I was in Advertising Dept.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not write for my my high school paper, I wrote for the Bronco, the college paper at Santa Clara University. I did write for the Poetry

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I did an issue with James Dunaway on high school athletes who made the US Olympic track team in 2012.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

You need to create your own reality. Find your dream, then, figure how to make a living.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Late mornings, central time, North America, post coffee

What's the best pitch you ever got?

A chance to listen to tapes of athletes involved in doping done by a global intelligence organization. The whole thing was secret agent man.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Oh, about supporting a Donald Trump falsehood.

What's your favorite drink?

A peety Scotch Whiskey, served on the rocks. I want to feel the peet as I inhale the beverage.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

I am reading, or managing social media.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love Vanity Fair magazine and the Financial times newspaper.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That I write about athletes competing. To understand the athlete, one must look into their lives, their goals.
