The former Italian prime minister praises the EU's 'One Europe, One Market' plan, while warning that von der Leyen's call for a more realist foreign policy should not sacrifice economic openness.
Op-ed: Why the EU must invest in culture

Culture is Not a Bargaining Chip
Belgium (Brussels Morning) Europe, wake up. Culture and cultural heritage aren’t just fancy extras—they’re the very bedrock of a truly value-based European Union. They fuel our creativity, drive societal innovation, and are the glue holding together our democracy, peace, and security. These elements aren’t side dishes; they’re the main course. Yet, when it comes to the EU’s strategic agenda, culture is treated as an afterthought, a mere pawn in the power plays of Brussels.

What we need is a Cultural Deal for Europe
Europe stands at a critical juncture, facing war, division, and polarization which are eroding the very fabric of our societies. As decades of peace and European cooperation are threatened, the fundamental purpose of the European Union seems increasingly undermined amidst growing societal inequality and the misuse of culture and identity to divide rather than connect communities.

Culture is chefsache: Without its culture, Europe would not exist
Europe stands at a critical juncture, facing war, division, and polarization which are eroding the very fabric of our societies. As decades of peace and European cooperation are threatened, the European Union's fundamental purpose seems increasingly forgotten amidst growing societal inequality and the misuse of culture and identity to divide communities. It's a time when we must not only react to these challenges but actively reimagine and rebuild the future of Europe with culture at its core.

Trauma and allegory: truthfulness in fact and fiction. Making a private archive productive
Collective trauma is a cataclysmic event that shatters the basic fabric of society. Aside from the horrific loss of life, collective trauma is also a crisis of meaning. The current paper systematically delineates the process that begins with a collective trauma, transforms into a collective memory, and culminates in a system of meaning that allows groups to redefine who they are and where they are going.
Why did Sirius slash the portrait of The Fat Lady?
“The Fat Lady had vanished from her portrait, which had been slashed so viciously that strips of canvas littered the floor; great chunks of it had been torn away completely.” -Harry Potter and the Prisoner Of Azkaban, Chapter 8-Flight of the Fat Lady. To say that Sirius is the one who had torn the portrait, “Did she say who did it?’ said Dumbledore quietly. ‘Oh, yes, Professorhead,’ said Peeves, with the air of one cradling a large bombshell in his arms.
How do people at hogwarts usually tell the time?
In the film adaptation, Hogwarts has an enormous Clock Tower in the centre of the main courtyard. It seems to chime on the hour and half-hour throughout the day They have clocks on the walls The following week dragged by. Wednesday night found Hermione and Harry sitting alone in the common room, long after everyone else had gone to bed. The clock on the wall had just chimed midnight when the portrait hole burst open. Ron appeared out of nowhere as he pulled off Harry’s Invisibility Cloak.
Yarr! A map to the hidden treasure!
"Yarr!! We had a laddie who called himself a "programmer" make a map t' our hidden treasure! But 'tis written wit' weird numbers 'n letters! "E5, N2, E3"... what does it even mean? Madness! Can't even scribe a proper treasure map, t' useless cretin. Fix it fer us! We'll gift ye a share o' t' treasure!" A group of pirates are having trouble reading a treasure map. Can you write a program to convert it into a more... piratey form? As input, you'll receive the original treasure map.
Random value excluding both limits
Please do not use the approach given in @Yann's answer: The reason is that . As numbers in javascript are doubles with 52 bit mantissa and the largest number smaller than 1.0 that can be represented is somewhere around . The expression is not representable and will truncate to exactly . The addition of to the random value will also truncate for large parts of the number range, skewing your distribution.
Controlling movement direction in isometic view
The oldest game to use absolute isometric controls I can think of is Q Bert: This was usually played on the joystick - which had 8 directions, not just the 4 arrow keys. Interestingly, though, instead of using diagonal movement on the joystick. you were supposed to tilt the whole joystick, enabling a far more comfortable control experience. Up, left, etc. mapped well to the screen this way.
Why Voldemort sent some of his best men to occupy the DADA job if he had cursed it?
We all know that Voldemort had cursed the DADA job (or if he didn't do it explicitely, that he has at least the knowledge about this job beeing cursed because nobody has been able to keep this job for more than a year since 1957). Then why did he choose to send some of his best allies to occupy this cursed job, knowing that they would probably fail in their mission because of this curse?
Did the Venom symbiote inhabit the Hulk?
In the Marvel Comic universe, the Venom symbiote used Peter Parker as a host, thus learning Spider-Mans abilities. So when Venom later was hosted by Eddy Brock, they were able to do whatever a spider does - so to speak. In the game LEGO MARVEL Super Heroes, you can unlock Venom as a playable character. In that game however, Venom has the ability to transform into a Hulk-like figure, similar to the fashion in which Bruce Banner can transform into the Hulk.
Do wizards carry backup wands
In not-magic world (especially in movies), spies and cops often carry a backup gun in case they are disarmed during combat (the famous gun in the sock). There are many examples in the books where a wizard or witch is disarmed during combat. All it takes is a simple expelliarmus spell. So it probably would be wise to carry a backup, wouldn't it? Is there any canon example of a wizard or witch carrying a backup wand?
Word or term for a bet where you have nothing to lose
Is there a single word or compact term for a bet where you are guaranteed to get your input back? Say you bet $1 on a dice roll and get $1 for each eye on the dice roll. Since the dice has a minimum of one eye, you are getting your input of $1 back no matter what. This of course is a very bad bet for the bank. But how is that called?
Voldemort and Unicorn Blood
Voldemort was sure he could finally kill Harry with the Elder Wand. In the forest, Harry did not even defend himself. So why would he drink Unicorn Blood now? He also still had an Horcurx left. When Harry revealed that he was not dead, it was to late for Voldemort to do anything about it. And even in the final fight, he still was sure he could simply kill Harry, up to the moment he died. And when his killing spell rebound and killed him instead, Voldemort was killed instantly.
How did Dumbledore know that Slughorn was an armchair?
It looked out of place My guess is that it simply looked out of place, either because it didn't match the rest of the decor (it was patterned on Slughorn's pyjamas, hardly the most common material used for an armchair), because he'd neglected to cover himself in the same dragonsblood spatter or was just too clean in general. Cushions lay deflated, feathers oozing from slashes in their sides; fragments of glass and china lay like powder over everything.
Did the Elder Wand try to kill Harry?
If Harry needed to die, then the Elder Wand should have done its best to follow Harry’s intentions. The excerpt below sounds like Harry wishing for his death to be quick. If the Elder Wand is tuned in to Harry's intentions, then it would be trying its best to kill Harry. Voldemort had raised his wand. His head was still tilted to one side, like a curious child, wondering what would happen if he proceeded.
Science Fiction & Fantasy Stack Exchange
It is a reference to greek mythology. The history and fate of humans was represented as a tapestry woven by the gods, with different threads representing different events/people. Q offers to Picard to change his past (his tapestry). That is where the name comes from. There are many parts of my youth that I'm not proud of. There were... loose threads - untidy parts of me that I would like to remove. But when I... pulled on one of those threads - it unraveled the tapestry of my life.
