1 Introduction Liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) are smart, active polymeric materials capable of a reversible actuation response to external stimuli such as heat [1], chemical gradients [2], magnetic fields [3], light [4], or mechanical loadings [5]. This response is enabled by the unique assimilation of liquid crystalline (LC) anisotropy, which can be programmed in a cross-linked viscoelastic polymer network.
