Introduction As sessile organisms, plants must modulate their development in response to the environmental landscapes they inhabit. This developmental plasticity is not merely a passive reaction but an active interpretive process in which cues, such as temperature, water availability, and nutrient status, are converted into precise instructions for life-history transitions (Sultan, 2010; Oberkofler et al., 2021; Aswathi et al., 2025).
1 INTRODUCTION The classical view that evolution proceeds through the gradual fixation of beneficial alleles is increasingly strained when applied to rapid environmental shifts. Other mechanisms, such as those driven by genome instability, can accelerate this adaptation (Pozzi et al., 2025). A critical gap persists between the pace of genetic change and the rate of environmental disruption (Merilä & Hendry, 2014; Seabra et al., 2018).
