Interview

Have you ever used a typewriter?

No. I became a journalist in 2000. It was a long time ago, but we still had computers!

How is social media changing news?

News now has to grab the attention of a reader or viewer in just seconds. This makes it more difficult to report complicated nuanced subjects

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It is a privilege to be able to give a voice to those who would not otherwise have one.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Human interest stories will always grab my attention.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I did not. I was too shy at high school. I always wanted to become a journalist, but I struggled to even answer a question in class.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My China content. Getting anything out of China is such a challenge and so each report here feels like a real achievement.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

The story is never about you. In this age of social media, it is tempting to try to be a star. Make your story the star.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Someone tries to sell me stories on tyre related products every week.

What's your favorite drink?

My morning coffee

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Swimming, in the gym, on my bike or running around the park.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New York Times
