Collaborative Insights From Young Ophthalmologists
Tanya Trinh, MBBS, FRANZCO, FWCRS: This symposium has a high concentration of leaders in anterior segment surgery as well as industry partners, and thus it’s a valuable opportunity to speak openly about these issues, which affect about 45% of current trainees and 30% of practicing ophthalmologists worldwide.1,2 The first step is identifying the extent of the problem within your institution. Unconscious bias, by definition, requires a conscious effort to look for and address it.

The Intersection of Medicine and Social Media
INTRODUCTION Blake K. Williamson, MD, MPH, MS: The use of digital and social media marketing for ophthalmology has exploded in the past few years. My practice, Williamson Eye Center in Louisiana, integrated these types of campaigns long before the COVID-19 pandemic began, but many other practices really got involved with social media during the pandemic.
Wearable Eye Technologies
Bionic Eye Technology: A Promising Device for Patients With Age-Related Macular Degeneration Thomas A. Finley, MD Technological solutions are being applied to challenging eye conditions in hopes of providing better outcomes to patients. Oculenz AR Wear glasses (Ocutrx Technologies; Figure 1) are a perfect example. Figure 1. The Oculenz AR Wear is designed for use by patients with AMD.
Curved-Field OCT
Endothelial cell density is a major consideration in the preoperative workup and postoperative care of patients undergoing corneal and cataract surgery. For example, this information is key to assessing the risk of corneal decompensation after intraocular surgery. Cell counts allow surgeons to plan protective intraoperative measures for patients undergoing a cataract procedure or IOL exchange, and they aid candidate selection for a phakic IOL.
The Abnormal Lens Capsule in Asteroid Hyalosis
Visualization of the posterior capsule is difficult during cataract surgery on eyes with asteroid hyalosis (AH) because of the increased translucence and decreased foldability of the capsule (Figure 1). The anterior capsulorhexis is also intrinsically different in these eyes because the anterior capsule is more brittle than usual. Although the preoperative appearance of the anterior capsule is typical in AH eyes, its postoperative appearance is qualitatively different at the slit lamp. Figure 1.
The Premium IOL Conversation … Updated
The COVID-19 pandemic has been a major learning experience. It has transformed the practice of medicine from shutdown to delivering care through telemedicine to a new normal. This pandemic led me to change my practice in ways I’d never thought about. My staff and I established processes that have improved patient safety and care as well as the efficiency of care delivery. Our highest priority, however, remains the patient experience.
Are Microbiota and Probiotics Ready for Use in Ophthalmology?
Recent evidence shows that microbiota play an important role in diseases such as dry eye disease (DED),1,2 glaucoma,3,4 uveitis,5 and age-related macular degeneration (AMD).6,7 Is it time to introduce this knowledge and the use of probiotics in our daily practice? WHAT WE KNOW The human microbiota are defined as the collection of microorganisms colonizing human body sites. Microbiome is a different term used in the context of genomics to refer to the collection of genes that the microbiota harbor.
Reevaluating Hyperopic LASIK
Laser vision correction (LVC) procedures for hyperopic and myopic eyes differ in several fundamental ways. First, the latent component of hyperopia can make both preoperative planning and the postoperative analysis of results more challenging. Second, the anterior chamber in hyperopic eyes is often too shallow to permit the implantation of a phakic IOL.
Blue-Violet Subjective Color Changes After Crystalens Implantation
Why does tree bark have a purple tinge? Why do my black socks look deep navy blue? If you listen carefully to patients who have had the Crystalens accommodating lens (Bausch + Lomb, Rochester, New York) implanted, you will likely find a small percentage of patients who ask these types of questions.
Late Calcification of IOLs
Postoperative opacification of an IOL caused by calcification (Figure 1) is a rare phenomenon typically observed only with hydrophilic IOLs.1,2 IOL opacification occurs when deposits of calcium phosphate accumulate on the surface of the IOL and/or within the lens (see Clinical Presentation).3 Quality of vision is affected to varying degrees with this phenomenon. Figure 1. A calcified IOL appears as a cloudy lens. CLINICAL PRESENTATION IOL calcification presents as a cloudy lens (Figure 1).
The Dos and Don’ts of Implanting an IOL in the Sulcus
The optimal location for IOL implantation after successful cataract extraction is within the capsular bag. This placement mimics the location of the natural crystalline lens and allows lifelong stability after the majority of cataract operations. Unexpected events, however, can occur that force cataract surgeons to use alternative strategies for IOL placement. One such option is to implant an IOL in the ciliary sulcus, between the remaining anterior lens capsule and posterior iris.
Anterior and Posterior Capsular Tears
When complications occur during cataract surgery, it is important to recognize them promptly and strategize their management. This article explores why anterior and posterior capsular tears occur during cataract surgery and how these complications can be managed so that surgery may be completed smoothly and efficiently. ANTERIOR CAPSULAR TEARS Sources. The anterior capsule can tear during cataract surgery for several reasons.
New Technologies I’m Using in 2021
Greater Confidence With Trifocal Toric IOLs Robert Edward Ang, MD Manila, Philippines Trifocal IOLs have become my primary choice for presbyopia correction during cataract surgery. The rate of spectacle independence is very high, and surprisingly, complaints of glare and halos and problems with contrast sensitivity are minimal. The key to achieving a successful outcome and high patient satisfaction is minimizing residual refractive error after surgery.
Medical Training and Ophthalmology Residency and Fellowship Programs
Strong Medical Education Collaborations Continue During the Pandemic Nisha Chadha, MD New York, New York I>n March 2020, an email message with the subject line “medical student clerkships canceled effectively immediately” popped into my inbox. Elective surgery, including cataract surgery, was also canceled, and New York City, where I practice, was shut down as cases of COVID-19 surged.
Yamane Tips and Tricks
A Dozen Pearls Zaina Al-Mohtaseb, MD The double-needle, small-incision, sutureless, transconjunctival scleral fixation technique was first described by Yamane et al in 2017.1 It uses small-gauge sclerotomies and a small clear corneal incision. The Yamane technique is associated with a quick visual recovery and a low risk of postoperative hypotony. Neither capsular nor iris support is required, and suture-related complications are avoided.
Treating Customers Like Family
Wallace Taylor, PCT’s 2020 Commercial Technician of the Year. For Arrow Exterminators’ Wallace Taylor, PCT’s 2020 Commercial Technician of the Year, providing an exceptional pest control experience all comes down to customer service. “It just so happens we take care of pests, but first we take care of our customers,” said Taylor. It’s his mantra when he services restaurants, offices, nightclubs, condominiums and even a MLB stadium in The Battery and Buckhead areas of Atlanta.
Essential Fatty Acid Treatment
Meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) or posterior blepharitis is typically associated with alterations in the quality or quantity of lipid produced by the meibomian glands (Figure 1). The result is an unstable tear film, leading to ocular discomfort and blurred, fluctuating vision (Figure 2). This, in turn, has a negative effect on an individual’s quality of life. Dry eye disease (DED) can result from multiple causes.
When to Get a Second Opinion
Cataract surgery has an excellent safety profile. When mild or severe complications occur, however, it can be a wise decision to obtain a second opinion. REASONS TO OBTAIN A SECOND OPINION Reassurance. The occurrence of a complication can undermine the surgeon-patient relationship. If the outcome differs from their expectations, patients may experience fear and confusion. The simple act of obtaining a second opinion may put the patient at ease.

Reactive vs. Proactive Bed Bug Service
PCT Magazine December 2019 Bed Bug Supplement - Bed Bug Supplement For years, pest management professionals have sought to make bed bug service a recurring revenue stream. Many PMPs are now figuring it out. Here’s how. December 4, 2019 Typically when bed bugs appear, pest management professionals step in to eradicate them. And while this work keeps the industry very busy, the revenue it generates is not recurring. It’s more of a one-time thing, and that can be hard to predict or count on.
ServiceMaster to Acquire Assured Environments
A commercial kitchen produces meals for hundreds of hungry customers every day, but organic build up in the drain, an overflowing garbage can, moisture near the dishwasher area, soda fountains, waitress station and food prep line and grease residue in traps can all also become an appetizing meal for cockroaches. With an effective bio sanitation program, however, kitchen managers can remove one key cockroach attractor naturally.
Damien Forshe, PCO and Urban Farming Pioneer, Passes Away
“If you can't get cockroaches to accept and eat it, there is no control,” said Doug Foster, owner of Burt’s Termite and Pest Control, Inc. That’s why he says bait palatability is crucial when treating for cockroaches. But to improve bait palatability, PMPs must think like a cockroach. “Thinking like a cockroach, I think a high moisture content of the bait is a quality that makes it more palatable, because as the bait placements age and dry out, acceptance dramatically goes down,” said Foster.

New(ISH) to the List: Apex Pest Control
After the fall of the termite pretreat market in 2008, Peter Eldridge, president of Apex Pest Control in Rockledge, Fla., knew he had to adjust. He limited spending and paid off all company debts, closed two small branches, laid off about 30 employees and sold off any trucks he no longer needed.
A Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing
Editor’s Note: This article is the first in a series focusing on risk management practices for the pest management industry. The articles are based on presentations from the 2017 PestSure Safety and Loss Prevention Conference where PMPs gathered to hear the latest strategies for protecting their employees, customers and businesses from a variety of threats.
