Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Aside from my work in high school and college, my first real job as a journalist was an internship with the Statesman Journal in Salem, OR.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes. I learned to type on one, in fact (but I'm pretty sure that's just because our school got them for free).

How is social media changing news?

Social media has become essential for spreading news to the public as well as reporting and curating it.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Sloan Sabbith from "The Newsroom."

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter. It's like a mini wire feed with the opportunity for engagement with others talking about the news.

Why did you become a journalist?

My high school newspaper advisor Becca Feeney taught me to challenge authority and hold people accountable. She inspired me to be a journo.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A story I wrote about Native American tribes' quest for federal recognition. It was nuanced and complicated, but an important story to tell.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Not when I'm on deadline.
