Visual Studio tip: Using Ctrl-L to delete a line with and without Clipboard backup
July 24th, 2024 Here is one Visual Studio tip from my colleague Gwyn Peña-Siguenza which I didn’t know about! Yes, even after 26 years using this fantastic tool, I am still discovering new features. So thanks to Gwyn for this!! This is all about deleting lines, and using the Windows Clipboard for support. You can see the short video on our YouTube channel, and there is also a longer video with 20 must-know shortcuts here.
Referencing a file in GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
When you start a new project from scratch in Visual Studio, a few files get created. Many templates are available, for many types of applications, from simple console apps to complex web applications, as well as mobile, serverless, and many many more. All these projects consist of multiple files. You have your code files, containing the software that will be run, organized in classes, with often each class in its own file. You have the configuration files, be it JSON, XML, YAML or other.
Using the "slash test" command in GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
Unit tests are one of the very important tools in our developer arsenal to get peace of mind. But many developers are often neglecting this step, often by lack of time or motivation to have sufficient coverage on their code. This is difficult, because it's one of these features that you miss the most when you really, really need it. For example, unit tests are critically important when a feature of a referenced library changes, because a new version is released.
Implementing a functionality with GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
The main benefit of using Generative AI in Visual Studio is that it enables you to type faster. It's important to keep in mind that Copilot is not a compiler, it's not magical, it is just an assistant. It's still important to test the generated code thoroughly (in fact there isn't even a guarantee that Copilot generated code will even compile!) In our new video, my colleague Gwyn demonstrates how a new feature can be implemented by prompting Copilot in an inline dialog.
Single, Short, Specific - Prompting GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
When we talk about AI, we have a relative long winded pitch about how the quality of the data you use to train your model is critical to the quality of the outputs that the model will create. If your data is bad, the outputs won't be good. The short version of this is Garbage in - Garbage out which is definitely shorter and easier to remember. A good prompt is often the key for a good answer.
Creating Tests with GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
One of the recurring jokes in our industry is that developers are not very good at two things when coding: Documenting code, and creating unit tests. These are two areas where GitHub Copilot can help! Let's see how in the new short video that I just published. The slash commands, "magic spells" for Visual Studio In previous videos, we talked about the availability of "Slash commands" in Visual Studio. These can be invoked by typing a Slash character '/' in a GitHub Copilot chat dialog.
Optimizing your code with GitHub Copilot for Visual Studio
In our previous post, we talked about so-called Slash commands in GitHub Copilot, and how they can be used as a kind of "magic spell" to ask Copilot to execute actions within Visual Studio. We did mention the /optimize command, amongst many others.
