Opinion: Vote Yes on FF for smoother, safer streets
We’re proud to join the Berkeley Firefighters Association, the Sierra Club, the League of Women Voters and the Democratic Party in recommending that every Berkeley voter vote yes on Measure FF by Nov. 5. We also recommend voting no on Measure EE, the competing, less adequate measure. Berkeleyside accepts submission of op-eds relating to election candidates and measures and publishes a balance of opinions at its discretion. We select those that are the most compelling, well-written and well-argued.
Measure CC is the right choice for Berkeley
Housing affordability in Berkeley has hit an unprecedented low. To meet the state’s Regional Housing Needs Assessment (RHNA) targets, the city must build 1,100 new housing units annually over an eight-year period. While the increasing development in downtown Berkeley might suggest progress toward this goal, the reality is different. Most of the 1,728 units added since 2022 are designated as “market-rate” rentals, leaving a significant gap in affordable housing options.
Opinion: Moving forward after Measure L
After a spirited campaign, Berkeley voters rejected Measure L, the $650 million omnibus bond measure proposed by the City Council in the November election. As members of the No on L campaign, we have been clear that we believe investment in our city is important, but it must be done with planning, transparency and accountability. To solve Berkeley’s challenges, the way Berkeley is governed must change.
Opinion: Look at Nancy O'Malley's record, not the outside-funded smear campaign
Unfortunately, campaigning has become more about fantasy than facts. In the Alameda County District Attorney race this tragedy has reached an appalling low partly because it is fueled by outside money. Billionaire George Soros’ PAC has dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into an effort to unseat our own District Attorney, Nancy O’Malley. This is very dangerous because a misinformed billionaire has funded a smear campaign against one of the most progressive and innovative DAs in the state.
Opinion: Buffy Wicks has received broad support because of her talent and values and she gets things done
Democracy is not a spectator sport — an adage that is especially true in the East Bay — where the average voter isn’t your average voter. The folks in Assembly District 15 are rigorous and thorough when vetting their candidates. That’s why we’re confident voters will see past the recent submission to Berkeleyside, unfairly attacking Assembly candidate Buffy Wicks for the success of her campaign.
Guest commentary: Cities can play a role in stopping wage theft
Wage theft is not just about failing to pay workers what they are owed nor is it about putting law-abiding businesses at a competitive disadvantage -- it's about cheating California taxpayers out of at least $8.5 billion a year in uncollected taxes. Put in perspective, that's equivalent to almost 60 percent of the General Fund allocations for California's 10 University of California campuses, 23 California State University campuses and 112 community college campuses.
