Washington can provide a variety of public schools that address diverse student needs | Opinion
Artist J. Hukee assists Avanti High School junior Nico Kalama-Arch with setting her newly created printing block onto the printing press at the Olympia Knitting Mills last March. The class is part of the Avanti High School ACE (Apprenticeships for the Creative Economy) pilot program where artists work with students in an internship setting. Olympia’s Avanti is rated as one of the state’s top 10 alternative high schools.
Washington can provide a variety of public schools that address diverse student needs | Opinion Original
We continue to hear people calling for the expansion of charter schools in Washington state. This shows a lack of knowledge about school law and organization in our state. Public school districts here operate schools that would be called charter schools in many other states. They are innovative, specialized, funded and governed by locally elected school boards. State law allows for virtually any kind of school that is approved by a local school board or group of school boards.
School budget shortfalls are caused by more than miscommunication
Recently, The Olympian published an article on the financial problems facing the Tumwater School District. The article pointed out that the current budget shortfall is due to a lack of communication on hiring and planning. Having spent much of my professional career in K-12 school district management, and the past six years working on school funding in the state legislature, I believe there is a far more urgent explanation to the budget shortfall in Tumwater and similar districts across the state.
Let’s make it easier for Seattle cancer treatment pioneers to work together on a cure
Rep. Laurie Dolan, D-Olympia Courtesy photo, 2022 It takes a team to beat cancer. I’ve battled cancer myself for years, and truly appreciate the heroic efforts of the doctors and researchers working on treatments and possible cures. I am alive today because of the work of the people at the UW Medicine, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA). Their good work, and two stem cell transplants, have kept me alive for the last 19 years.

4 Hallmarks Of A Great Managed Service Provider
The best MSPs become strategic partners to their customers. Service providers have quietly kept the business world running for decades. Today, they may be a company’s greatest hope for surviving and thriving in a post-pandemic world. Managed service providers (MSPs or service providers) operate in the background to maintain another company’s technology.

Linking graduation to high-stakes testing was a mistake
Standardized assessments are required by the federal government to measure the performance of the education system as a whole. They were never meant to be used to prove a student had earned a diploma. AN estimated 5,500 high school seniors across Washington state are at risk of not receiving a diploma in the coming weeks due to a failure in state law and an even bigger failure of the Legislature to fix the problem.
