Perfecting Siam: Sovereignty, Sacred Space, and Territory at Wat Rachathiwat
ABSTRACT In 1908, the Siamese monarchy undertook the renovation of the ordination hall or ubosot of Wat Rachathiwat, a forest monastery then on the outskirts of Bangkok. Months before, the monarchy ratified a treaty that compelled Siam to recognise France’s territorial claims to Angkor Wat and its Khmer-majority provinces.
From the WWD Archive: Christian Francis Roth – Young Wunderkind - VNExplorer
From the WWD Archive: Christian Francis Roth – Young Wunderkind This interview first appeared in WWD on June 27, 1989. By LAWRENCE CHUA NEW YORK - Christian Francis Roth is not our average piece of press bait. He may be every fashion journalist's dream: young, good looking, with nice white teeth and, of course, talent, but this 20-year-old designer is well aware of the shelf life of the common press darling.
WWD Time Capsule: Zang Toi Leads New York’s New Wave Original
View ALL 13 Photos For Zang Toi, it all starts with color. Splashy hues like hot pink and turquoise theoretically should never be seen together, but the 28-year-old designer combines them with a flair and that belies his years. This spring, for his second signature collection, he took his cues from another master of color, painter Yves Klein.
Christian Francis Roth Ahead of His Sophomore Collection
This interview first appeared in WWD on June 27, 1989. "The press always needs some thing new, which is understandable, but the work is so delicate, so difficult and requires so much attention," he says.
Tran Anh Hung by Lawrence Chua - BOMB Magazine
Tran Nu Yen-Khe as Mui at 20 years old in Tran Anh Hung’s The Scent of the Green Papaya. In The Scent of Green Papaya, director Tran Anh Hung conjures the layered and impassioned sounds of the Vietnam he left as a child. There is the rain falling meaningfully on ceramic floors. The empty knock of a knife against a green papaya. The sizzle of rice filling an empty jar, extinguishing anxiety, nurturing hope.
Looking for Ali
Figure lying on floor of mosque, surrounded by standing soldiers. Hooded figure on box, wires trailing from fingers. Figure on a leash with soldier. Green-hued landscape crisscrossed with moving lights. Aqua-tinted aerial view of anonymous city intersected by moving lines of light. There is an abstract and uncanny quality to many of the images of violence in Iraq that are circulating today.
Lesbian Director Maria Maggenti on 1995's 'The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love'
Lesbian Director Maria Maggenti on 1995's The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love This article originally appeared in the June 1995 issue of OUT. She is not much taller than a parking meter, but when Maria Maggenti speaks, her voice runs over everything in its path, crashing through the East Village coffeehouse we’re sitting in.
BOMB Magazine - Karyn Kusama by Bette Gordon
Karyn Kusama and I met on a hot June Saturday to talk about her new film, . Kusama gives us a glimpse into the world of boxing from a female point of view, and she pushes our expectations by drenching her story in sweat, emotion and bad-girl attitude. As a director, Kusama has figured out how to get inside the psyche of her young protagonist, played by first-time actress Michelle Rodriguez.
Constant by Linda Boersma - BOMB Magazine
Constant, Symbolische voorstelling van New Babylon (detail) (Symbolic Representation of New Babylon), 1969, collage on paper, 55 x 60 inches. Photo by Victor E. Nieuwenhuys. The Dutch artist Constant was born Constant Nieuwenhuys in 1920 in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. When I visit him in his studio [in the summer of 2003], he opens a good white wine, is slightly surprised when I decline to join him, and sits down in front of one his latest paintings, Les Baigneuses (The Bathers), completed in 2003.
Julie Mehretu by Lawrence Chua - BOMB Magazine
Julie Mehretu, Congress, 2003, ink and acrylic on canvas, 71× 102 inches. All images courtesy of The Project, New York and Los Angeles. At the heart of Julie Mehretu’s paintings is a question about the ways in which we construct and live in the world. Perhaps that is what makes the work so radical: its willingness to unravel the conventionally given answers about the violent environment we inhabit today. Mehretu’s paintings are composed of layers, fragments and movements.
Queer 'Zines
I have seen the future and it is a six-and-a-half-foot African-American drag queen named Vaginal Creme Davis.
