The Ritalin-Adderall Boom Thirty Years Later
Exactly thirty years ago on May 15th,1996, the New York Times published a front-page lead to a report of a boom in Ritalin production and use in children which was raising ethical questions in some quarters. The story was based upon an article I had published earlier that month in the Hastings Center Report (a bioethics journal).
The financial reason why parents beg me to diagnose their kids with autism
“Does he have autism?” Robert’s mother asked anxiously. I’m a behavioral/developmental pediatrician working in a front-line private practice for the last 45 years in a Bay Area suburb. The family had asked me to perform an evaluation on Robert, a 6-year-old who had already been to two other expert teams.
Adult ADHD Treatment Challenges
TCPR: How does stimulant treatment differ in adults versus children with ADHD? Dr. Diller: The benefits are similar, but the risks are different. With young children, I worry about side effects like appetite loss, insomnia, and growth retardation. In adults, I worry about medication misuse. ADHD: The History of a Diagnosis
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) has gone by a slew of different names over the years: organic drivenness, minimal brain dysfunction, hyperkinesis, hyperactive syndrome, attention deficit disorder, and ADHD. ADHD was originally thought of as “minimal brain dysfunction,” according to scholar Robert Erk.

That was one possibility I thought of to account for the six teenage patients of mine who over a recent three-month period presented to emergency rooms for depression and suicidal thinking. They were all between 14 and 16. Four of the six were girls.

America's love affair with legal amphetamine: Column
When will we be able to just say no? I've decided to create a new psychiatric disorder. Why not? Drug companies do it all the time. Shire, which makes Adderall, won approval recently from the Food and Drug Administration to market its amphetamine drug, Vyvanse, for the treatment of BED. You haven't heard of it?
