What Are the Characteristics of True Heroes?
Rank these six individuals according to how well they fit your definition of a true hero. A. Man who rushes into a burning house to rescue a small child. B. Civil rights activist and Baptist minister Martin Luther King, Jr. C. The American soldier who saved his platoon by single-handedly eliminating a German machine-gun nest. D. Singer, songwriter, and philanthropist Dolly Parton. E. The student protester in 1989 who stood resolutely in front of an advancing tank in Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. F.
A New Way to Think About Crime
Many people break laws, but only some become "criminals." Police and court resources may be unevenly applied across neighborhoods and social groups. Campus misconduct, for example, is prosecuted less often due to university handling. For 35 years, I taught a course called "Psychology and Law" in a small college town in Wisconsin. Every year I asked my students the same question: Where are the high crime areas in town?

Expert Opinions About Hypnosis Have Shifted Over the Years
Early studies indicated that hypnosis could enable extraordinary feats. Methodologically stronger studies have identified other explanations for the seeming specialness of hypnosis. Most hypnotized persons are not simply faking. It's more complicated than that, psychologically. Current thinking conceptualizes hypnosis as an instance of motivated role-playing. In 1974, I was hypnotized as part of a stage show at the Celebrity Club in Hollywood, California.
Do People Around the World Trust Scientists?
One of the most unsettling things about living in the United States today is the fact that millions of Americans have a low opinion of science and scientists. In one poll, 22 percent of adults said they have little or no confidence that scientists will act in the public’s best interests. Five years earlier, that number was only 12 percent (Pew Research Center, 2026). It’s not a huge mystery why this is so. For years, prominent voices have been telling Americans that scientists should not be trusted.

Social Psychology’s Most Underappreciated Theory
A theory that can explain a wide range of social psychological phenomena. A source with high strength exerts more impact than a source with low strength. The intensity of a social force is the product of the number, strength, and immediacy of impact sources. Are you familiar with Bibb Latané’s theory of social impact, first introduced in 1981? Probably not.
Are Muslim Arabs Especially Likely to Believe in Fate?
The idea that some cultural groups are more fatalistic than others is not new. More than 100 years ago, social theorist Max Weber claimed that capitalism first emerged in Protestant countries and not elsewhere because, as religions go, the Protestant faith was less fatalistic than the others. Unlike Catholics, for example, early Protestants extolled the virtues of planning and hard work.
Do "Honor Cultures" Raise the Risk of Depression and Suicide?
Several studies in recent years have identified a sociocultural variable—the importance of honor—that is associated with higher rates of depression and suicide. An honor culture is a society or social group that emphasizes the importance of maintaining one’s reputation as honorable. In honor cultures, people are especially polite and avoid offending others. They also are likely to punish those who besmirch their honor.
4 Signs Your Child Has a Good Teacher
It’s fairly easy to know if your child’s teacher is a good person. You can observe the teacher’s demeanor at open houses and parent-teacher conferences throughout the year. You can also ask other parents about a particular teacher. In most cases, it’s reasonable to assume that your kid’s teacher is a good person. In my experience, almost all elementary and middle school teachers are kindhearted individuals. They chose the profession of teaching because they want to help others and like kids.
