Leah Pattem’s Biography

I'm an award-winning freelance journalist and photographer covering breaking news and underreported community stories in Spain. I work in both English and Spanish with El País, BBC, The Guardian, Times, Al Jazeera, El Diario, and more, including radio stations and channels.

In 2016, I founded Madrid No Frills, a narrative-driven hyperlocal media project focusing on Madrid's social impact and movements, and celebrating local culture. MNF has a following of over 50,000, and a team of regular contributors.

I'm a trained teacher and run journalism and photography courses for school and university students and professional journalists looking to expand their field. I'm an experienced public speaker and organise free talks to expand the dialogue around the stories I'm investigating.

I'm the winner of the European Press Prize Special Award 2024 and IJ4EU Impact Award 2024 for The Border Graves Investigation, a cross-border team investigation into unmarked migrant graves along EU borders.
