Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was requested to write a first-person piece for Newsweek.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

In my childhood, they were pretty cool.

How is social media changing news?

It is propelling the attention economy in a different direction.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

I don't have one.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

I wouldn't class myself as a journalist, I would class myself as a psychologist who occasionally writes.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

I use Grammarly as a way of improving my writing.

What's your favorite social network?

Linkedin, due to it's organic nature.

Who do you wish followed you?

Fellow life coaches and psychologists.

Why did you become a journalist?

I wouldn't class myself as a journalist, I'm a psychologist who writes occasionally.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No I didn't.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Writing my Newsweek piece, as somebody who has struggled writing all his life, was a particularly sweet moment.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Consistency, mentoring, building a network.

When's the best time to pitch you?

I'm normally working on media related requests in the morning.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

Nothing springs to mind, I write very little news-wise, and much more on psychology and wellbeing.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

I am rarely pitched, I tend to write the occasional freelance piece if it piques my interest.

What's your favorite drink?

An occasional whisky.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In a local forest exploring.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I enjoy reading a variety of sources to shape my worldview.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

I don't have a beat.
