Leila is a journalist and photographer with the South African based publication, Daily Maverick. She has worked as a journalist since 2010, starting out as an investigative broadcast journalist for Carte Blanche in Johannesburg. She has covered hard news and in-depth features delving into a range of issues from the lack of transformation in the South African property sector to ocean conservation, gentrification in the heart of Cape Town and the brutal eviction of vulnerable farm workers and their families in wine-making regions of the Western Cape. She has covered high profile South African events including the arrest of former President Jacob Zuma, the death of Nobel Peace Laureate and veteran anti-apartheid activist Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu, the 2015 student protests which rocked the nation and the funeral of former president Nelson Mandela's wife Winnie Madikizela-Mandela. She writes, shoots and edits and is currently based in London.
