Dan’s Daily: Penguins in Jiricek Sweepstakes; Team Hears Jarry Boos
The Pittsburgh Penguins are one of a half dozen teams vying for Columbus Blue Jackets 20-year-old defenseman David Jiricek. The big right-handed defenseman and Columbus haven’t been able to make it work, and the NHL trade rumors have swirled. Shelly Anderson and I rolled through the Penguins locker room on Thursday after practice, and as part of her story are a couple of interesting nuggets, including a reaction to fans booing Tristan Jarry.
Food for Thought: Could Jarry Be Right Guy After All? Original
Hear us out. This is not an opinion column taking a side. It’s, well, food for thought on this Thanksgiving Day about Pittsburgh Penguins goaltender Tristan Jarry. What if Jarry, a lightning rod for criticism for months if not years now, is a guy who can help lead the Penguins back to the playoffs this season?
Penguins Trade for Faded Prospect Tomasino from NSH; Full Analysis Original
The Pittsburgh Penguins made a minor trade Monday that they hope will eventually pay more than small dividends. They acquired former first-round pick Philip Tomasino from the Nashville Predators for a 2027 fourth-round pick. The slight irony of the deal is minutes before the trade, the Penguins re-assigned Sam Poulin to the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins. Poulin was the Penguins 2019 first-round pick, 21st overall. Tomasino was Nashville’s 2019 first-round pick, selected 24th overall.

The Pittsburgh Penguins youth movement is officially underway as 2022 first-round pick Owen Pickering will make his NHL debut Saturday against the San Jose Sharks at PPG Paints Arena. Coach Mike Sullivan was coy hours before the game, calling all players a game-time decision, but Pickering took his customary rookie lap and participated in pregame line rushes, signifying Saturday would be the day of which every young hockey player dreams–their NHL debut.
Penguins Wrap: Hitting a Low Point; Malkin Spotlight; Prospects Arriving
The Pittsburgh Penguins might have reached rock bottom this past week. They probably hope their no-show against the Dallas Stars was rock bottom, anyway. That helped lead to other news, as the team began calling up some of its prospects. We’ll see where that goes. They also recalled Tristan Jarry in the hope that the goaltender was able to regain his All-Star form. Evgeni Malkin’s name came up a couple times. While he doesn’t speak with reporters regularly, he often lays things bare when he does.
