Fault lines of a war foretold
In the early hours on 10 November 2020, news broke that a Russian-mediated ceasefire agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan had been reached overnight, halting the large-scale military confrontation that had erupted on 27 September along the Nagorny Karabakh Line of Contact. Although it was the fourth ceasefire negotiated within a few weeks, there is reason to believe that it will be more stable than its predecessors.
Lukashenka’s waiting game
Osteuropa: How would you describe what is happening in Belarus? Lev Gudkov: We are seeing a crisis of the totalitarian regime that emerged in Belarus after the collapse of the totalitarian Soviet system. Regardless how the crisis ends, the authoritarian government will not continue in the form in which it has existed for the past 26 years. It has become obvious that the regime does not have the resources to maintain itself. Without the support of the imperial centre in Moscow, it is unsustainable.
The Evolution of Homo Sovieticus to Putin’s Man
Lev Gudkov remembers sitting in his Moscow office as a young sociologist, surrounded by stacks of letters. It was 1989, and for the first time after decades of hushed conversation around kitchen tables, Russians had been asked for their opinions on a range of economic and social issues. The response was so overwhelming that the nearby post office was instructed to stop deliveries so that the team would not be barricaded in, says Gudkov, head of the independent Levada Center polling agency.
U.S.-Russia Relations in Conflict
Where is the U.S.-Russia relationship headed? Both countries face key challenges, both domestic and international, that will shape the relationship in the coming year. How will their leaders respond? And what obstacles lie in their paths? Carnegie’s Dmitri Trenin and Andrei Kolesnikov discussed these questions with Ivo H. Daalder from the Chicago Council on Global Affairs and Lev Gudkov from Levada Center. Ivo H. Daalder is the president of the Chicago Council on Global Affairs.
What’s wrong with Ksenia Sobchak’s campaign to be Russian president
I felt that something was wrong back in July. It was during the children’s “Direct Line” with President Putin. A girl from Sochi’s Sirius centre for gifted children asked — out of nowhere — what the president’s attitude to feminism was. Without blinking, Putin stated that feminism has been around for a while and that it has some useful qualities. “It’s good to defend women’s rights, we just don’t need to go crazy with it.” The conversation was for children, but the rules were for adults.

The performance artist
Ever since the detention of Pussy Riot five years ago, arrests of artists for non-sanctioned spontaneous performances have become the norm. Katrin Nenasheva was detained five times over the last two years — in particular for her anti-war protests. RU This week, we continue our joint project with OVD-Info and RombTV, publishing monologues of people detained during Russia’s new protest wave. As a child, I wanted to become either a clown or a journalist.
Russian court acquits journalist Sergei Vilkov of defamation charges
We continue our partnership with OVD-Info, an NGO that monitors politically-motivated arrests in Russia. Every Friday, we bring you the latest information on freedom of assembly. This week, a Saratov court acquitted journalist Sergei Vilkov in a case concerning alleged defamation of a member of the region’s legislative assembly.
Dissent in Russia: a festival of disobedience?
What kind of freedom do the latest wave of protesters want? Has a new kind of Russian emerged since the collapse of the USSR? The conclusion of our interview with one of Russia’s leading sociologists, Lev Gudkov. For the last 28 years, The Levada Center has been one of Russia’s most important surveyors of public opinion, but in 2016 the Putin government, having no use for independent sociology, added it to its list of “foreign agents”.
In Russia, sociology isn’t just about figures
Is solidarity possible in Russia? How has the relationship between Russia’s government and its citizens panned out in the last few years? An interview with one Russia’s leading sociologists, Lev Gudkov. The Levada Center is one of Russia’s most important surveyors of public opinion.
The Stalin Puzzle: Deciphering Post-Soviet Public Opinion
Joseph Stalin is not yet dead, it would seem. The Soviet leader who was responsible for the deaths of millions over his thirty-year rule still commands worryingly high levels of admiration for a host of reasons. These findings are clear in the first-ever comparative opinion polls on the dictator in the post-Soviet countries of Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, and Russia.
2016 Paradoxes, Tu-154 Tragedy, The Story of Soviet Man and When the Regime Will Fall
In this week’s media highlights, Kirill Rogov observes the paradoxes of the public mood; Lev Gudkov explains why Soviet Man was preserved in the Russian public consciousness; Arkady Dubnov argues that the Soviet Union disintegrated due to developments in the Soviet republics; Denis Volkov shows how the “war of words” over the recent Tu-154 crash is splitting society; and Vladislav Inozemtsev predicts when the regime will collapse.
One Answer Too Many: The Fall of Russia’s Only Independent Pollster Levada
There’s a knock on the door. “‘Hello! I’m a foreign agent. Can I ask you a question?” the person on the other end says. Six months ago, Lev Gudkov could still smile during an interview with The Moscow Times at the thought of the average Russian’s reaction to such an introduction from a pollster at his door. Since then the mood at the independent Levada Center has soured. On Sept.
