Trump and Putin: An Authoritarian Alliance That Poses a Danger to All of Us
A little more than a week ago, we witnessed a significant shift in world politics and international relations when Trump and JD Vance humiliated Ukrainian President Zelenskyy during his visit to the White House. Although great powers such as the US throughout history have exploited smaller states, it is exceptional to see it being done this openly. The event at the White House was the result of many other developments over the past weeks.

Labour challenges on doorstep of new EU parliament
Opinion The rising cost of living, the protests that Europe has seen in the last years, and the results of the European elections, show the need to invest in the social dimension of the European project, and to improve the everyday lives of ordinary Europeans. The EU parliament's employment and social affairs committee (EMPL) will be at the core of this work.
In Finland, the Left Alliance Just Trounced the Far Right
Last weekend’s elections to the European Parliament saw anti-immigration forces advance across much of the EU. Far-right parties are now set to collectively control roughly one quarter of all seats, including ones with neo-Nazi connections like Germany’s Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) and Cyprus’s National Popular Front (ELAM). In general, northern Europe bucked this grim trend — and the news from Finland was particularly bright.

The Resistible Rise of the Finns Party
When Sanna Marin became the prime minister of Finland at the end of 2019, the international media went wild. A thirty-four-year-old woman, Marin now heads a coalition government whose four other parties also have women leaders, three of them in their thirties.
Our Welfare Isn’t Business’s Business
It all seemed so promising back in 2015, when the “three S’s” — Juha Sipilä, Timo Soini, and Alexander Stubb — announced their new government. The dapper Europhile Stubb, leader of Finland’s traditional conservative party, enthused that the forces joining in coalition seemed almost to have merged. He, and the whole Finnish center-right, thought this would be the government that would finally reform the social and health care system and achieve capital’s long-standing aim of forcing labor to heel.

Where Next for Finland’s Welfare State?
It should be remembered that the party differs from other populist-right forces in its origins. Unlike, say, the Swedish Democrats and the Front National, it began as an agrarian party with migration playing a relatively minor role. Its rhetoric was much more traditional populism — the ordinary man against the elites, particularly against the EU. In the mid-2000s anti-immigrant, right-wing groups in Finland were looking to come together and saw the potential of the True Finns as a vehicle.
