The Watchdog Role: how journalism holds power to account
From the offset, the panel concurred that the role of the watchdog journalist is to scrutinise and hold power to account through accurate reporting that aims to serve the public above anything else. As journalists, we must be ‘astutely aware of who reads, who listens, who watches’, according to Kate Adie, a groundbreaking journalist and Newcastle University graduate who pioneered global conflict coverage on both Gulf Wars and the Iranian Embassy siege.

Sea Salt and Tan Lines: My Travel Playlist
Image Credits: Pixabay Bumper, Cults Waking up early in the morning, watching the sunrise in the car on the way to the airport. This song captures the feeling of adventure and excitement - I first heard it in an episode of Everything I Know About Love, and I just know the main character felt the same way as I do when I listen to it. Sea of Love, Cat Power All in the title. Surrounded by family, and the sea.

Who is paying £100 for an alarm clock?
Image credit: Indra Projects, Unsplash If you’re anything like me, you set a million alarms, snooze them all, and fall back asleep. When I discovered the ‘sunrise lamp’, I thought - could this be my solution? Now when I wake up with the Hatch Restore alarm clock, my day is instantly off to a good start. As someone who takes pride in their morning routine, all the customisable settings are perfect. Nothing beats custom lighting and sounds to soothe me into deep rest and wake me feeling energised.

How to make the most of Freshers' Week
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates Image credit: Samantha Gades, Unsplash So I’ll say this. Say yes to everything. Go for those drinks, stay in for a pizza night, dress up, don’t dress up. Respect your boundaries, but do as much as possible. You’ll never be this young, naive, and stupid ever again. Go make memories. There are so many exciting parts of university life that you won’t see in the first week But, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.
Age gaps: do they matter in a relationship?
Image credit: pixabay, @3194556 My boyfriend and I have a 17 month age gap, and while it may not sound like much, a 19 year old and a 21 year old sounds a little questionable to some. Especially when the woman is older. Everyone is pretty much in agreement that age gaps matter less the older you are, which I agree with. But I think it all comes down to maturity, really. Often I get the jokes about how my boyfriend is younger than I am, but they're only jokes.

Varsity 2024: M1 Futsal crown finale with penalty victory
Image: NCL Sport There were many defining moments throughout, both from the dedicated players and the equally dedicated crowd. Initially, Northumbria led the game 3-0 until Newcastle brought it back 3-3, battling it out for the title until the very last second. Northumbria's goalkeeper scored the final goal, much to everyone's surprise, ending the match with a draw, rewarding triumph and celebration even from the opposing team.
RAG Week: Meet the Guide Dogs!
On February 15, Raising and Giving (RAG) hosted an event for students to meet the guide dogs, their owners, and learn more about the charity. Four furry friends and their owners shared information on their dogs, stories, and experiences from the Guide Dogs Charity. I sat down in conversation with John, and his furry friend Hayley - a friendly, eight year old Labrador. When she retired from being a guide dog at six years old, during COVID-19, John rehomed her.

Living in the Lake District: Recommendations for Tourists
Image from Pixabay, @ebor All my life I've lived here, my childhood home neatly nestled between the woods leading to a small village and the estuary bridging to another. Everyday in summer spent on the water, or in the garden BBQing. But, if I came to the Lakes as a tourist, what would be some of the first things I did? Lake Windermere Since the Lake District is known for large bodies of water and sublime mountain landscapes, it would be rude not to include my home: Lake Windermere.

A Review of Frantic Assembly's Metamorphosis
Growing up as a theatre kid, Frantic Assembly has always been my favourite theatre group. When I heard they were doing an adaptation of Kafka’s novella, Metamorphosis, I knew I had to see it for myself. So, I did. On Thursday 26 October, at the Northern Stage in Newcastle upon Tyne. Despite attending a matinee show, I still felt the horror and thrill of an evening performance. So much so, that I was surprised it was still daylight when I exited the theatre.

How to: effortless heels walk
Image Credit: James Devaney, Vogue.com Something I often think belongs on my CV is that I know how to walk in heels. And not just the standard not-breaking-an-ankle walk, but an actual walk like a normal person. It's honestly my superpower. You see all these supermodels plastered all over social media, walking like they're not in agonising pain when we all know the real truth. It hurts, like hell. Sometimes they're stood for hours at a time, at fashion week or runway shows. So, how do they do it?

Is double denim making a comeback?
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates The Canadian tuxedo seems to have circled back around into the hearts of fashion lovers, but will it stay around? I must say, I am a fan of the new trend.

The Truth Behind Beauty Pageants
Sign up to our mailing list so you never miss any future updates An insight into the world of beauty pageants Image Credit: Instagram @libgriffx I competed in the UK’s entry to the biggest beauty pageant in the world. But I did get through, and I went to Wales and competed.

The man behind this years' Met Gala theme and people to look out for...
Is exam season too much for students?
Exam season is fast approaching, and so is the start of all our worries. Are schools putting too much pressure on students? Or do we all have chronic anxiety and stress this time of year? The education system is simply not designed for us. There isn’t enough inclusion for all students, we are just not catered for. The way we are expected to learn and reproduce from memory is too high of an expectation - and many of us are feeling the pressure.
'Is it Summer yet?' Deadline season horrors
Everyone has exams, assignments, coursework, and dissertations fast approaching. But when dealing with the end-of-year season, what is the best way to approach deadlines? The short answer is - I don’t know. I’m sitting here writing this article, procrastinating on my own deadlines. While I’ve had a good few weeks off to re-energise, the stress of deadlines made it less of a break and more of a burden - and I think that is felt by most of us.

Surviving a Terrorist Attack

The Big Red Boots...
Everyone is talking about the big, red boots from MSCHF. I think it’s safe to say incorporating them into a decent outfit is a challenge, and only a few have managed to do it and wear them well. Still, the viral boots are dominating the internet. But, why? The vibe I’m getting is ‘Clifford the Big Red Dog’, mixed with cosplaying a garden gnome, or a supersized ‘Peppa Pig’. Personally, I don’t see the hype.
The return of the Discover Newcastle Fair!
I didn’t even know there was a ‘Discover Fair’ until one of my friends suggested we go check it out for freebies and to see what it was all about. But, I can’t lie, it was very underwhelming. Most of the brands/companies represented were chains, and I would’ve liked to see independently run businesses. Or, something more helpful for university students, like future careers, etc.
The Controversy of Couture Shows

Let's Talk About Sex Baby: NUSU'S sex positivity campaign
Image Credit: NUSU Website The SU introduced their ‘Let’s Talk About Sex Baby!’ campaign after the President’s manifesto promoting sex-positivity, and let’s say, it’s banging! (Pun intended.) Aesthetics, recycling trends, and consumerism
In this ‘new age,’ it seems Gen-Z’s favourite buzzword is: aesthetics. Aesthetics have dominated consumer culture, and how we want to be perceived by others is seemingly more important than discovering our own identities. Every decade, year, or even month we see a resurgence of trends as others subside once again. If you’re looking into which trend to pick next or predict ahead of time, Mina Le’s YouTube channel is the place to surf.
