Gutting the Right to Know
I usually refrain from criticizing opinions issued by the Montana Supreme Court (the Court). I cannot stand silent, however in the face of the Court’s recent evisceration of Montana’s fundamental constitutional Right to Know, Article II, section 9.
House Again Moves to Pass “Nonprofit Killer” Bill Giving Trump “Unchecked Power”
Lawmakers in the House are once again moving to pass a dangerous bill, nicknamed the “nonprofit killer” by opponents, that would give Donald Trump and future presidents wide leeway to attack nonprofit groups that the presidential administration views as ideological foes. The bill, H.R. 9495, is slated for a markup in committee on Monday that will likely be followed by a floor vote requiring a simple majority vote to pass, potentially this week.
Will Men Organize to End Gun Violence?
How many ears must one man have Before he can hear people cry? How many deaths will it take ’til he knows that too many people have died? —Bob Dylan, “Blowin’ in the Wind” It’s been six years since the Valentine’s Day massacre of 14 students and three teachers at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, and gun violence remains as virulent a disease as ever, with regular new outbreaks in states across the country.
Age of Anxiety... Again!
Students of American history realize that we as a people have experienced quite a few ‘ Ages of National Anxiety’. Looking back but within 110 years or so we know there was national anxiety during World Wars 1 and 2 and of course, in my boomer memory, during the (phony) Vietnam War when we interceded in a country’s civil war.
Gun Violence is a Reflection of Us All
In the streets of Bogalusa, Louisiana, a sadly familiar scene unfolds—the mournful wail of sirens, the piercing flash of blue lights, and another community shaken by the harsh crack of gunfire. This is a recurring nightmare echoing across Louisiana, reflecting a national crisis that grips the heart of America. This isn’t just about statistics; it’s about gun violence victims like Ranshad Jefferson, whose story mirrors countless others nationwide.
How War Divides Us
Blame Donald Trump and all too many of his followers, but don’t just blame him or them. Yes, he was indeed responsible for the nightmare of January 6, 2021, and, in his own fashion, for the incitement of right-wing militia (terror!) groups like the Proud Boys. (“Stand back and stand by!”) But in this country, in this century, violence has become as all-American as apple pie. In these years, it’s been violence and more violence all the way, literally in the case of the Pentagon.
Forward to the Past
Outrage continues over Justice Neil Gorsuch’s recent remarks that policy responses to COVID-19 may represent “the greatest intrusion of civil liberties in the peacetime history of this country.” Slavery, the historical exclusion of women and non-property owners from voting, Jim Crow, the abuses of the Red Scares and an infinite list of other violations of civil liberties are nothing to Gorsuch compared to asking people to wear masks and get vaccinations.
The Myth Of Daniel Ellsberg As The ‘Good Leaker’
(Photo: Christopher Michel) Even as Pentagon Papers whistleblower Daniel Ellsberg closes in on the end of an incredible and impactful life, the Washington Post and the pundit class still cannot resist using Ellsberg as a prop to misleadingly assert that he is history’s best example of a “Good Leaker.” Devlin Barrett, a national security correspondent who covers the FBI and the United States Justice Department for the Post, spoke to Ellsberg and invited him to compare what he did to the leak...
Aggression, Guns, and Marcuse
Better not knock on the wrong door or drive into the wrong driveway, you may get shot. Kids are afraid to go to school for fear of getting killed, as the body count from mass shootings climbs every day. Hate crimes are increasing, and just driving to work is potentially dangerous. Think of tailgaters honking their horns and flipping you the bird as they speed past. Politicians address these issues by calling for gun safety legislation, increasing the number of police, and so on.
How One City Ended Prison Gerrymandering
The Howard R. Young Correctional Institution sits between a creek and Interstate 495 in Wilmington, Delaware. For the last ten years, the prison’s 1,281 residents were counted as constituents of Wilmington’s third city council district. But when local officials sat down to redraw Wilmington’s city council lines after the 2020 Census, they took a new approach: They counted people in the prison at their last known address in Wilmington — and didn’t count them at all if they hadn’t lived in the city.
We Must Refuse “Normal Life” After Police Violence Like Killing of Tyre Nichols
My stomach turned when I first watched the video of Memphis police officers yanking Tyre Nichols out of his car to Tase and pursue him, and then beat him. I felt my heart wrench while watching the police officers prop a beaten and handcuffed Nichols against a patrol car only to hear one officer yell, “Bruh, sit up!” after Nichols fell over, as if he were in any condition to comply.
Drone Whistleblower Daniel Hale Is a Truth-Teller
Source: The Intercept Since the arrest and indictment of Daniel Hale on charges that he leaked the documents that formed the basis for The Intercept’s series “The Drone Papers,” as well as documents about the government’s secret watchlisting system, I have wanted to speak publicly about this unjust prosecution.
Why we need to stop Warehousing the Mentally Ill in Jail
Source: Informed Comment By essentially rejecting the provisions of the U.S.Joint Commission on Mental Illness and Health, a very well designed 1963 Kennedy era program entitled, “Action for Mental Health” and other attempts to trim mental health budgets and services, many states and localities have opted to spend the same dollars on inappropriate incarceration in prisons.
Israeli-trained police invade Baltimore in crackdown on Black Lives Matter
For the second time in less than a year, an American city was transformed into a hypermilitarized police state to subdue growing resistance to anti-Black police violence. Eight months ago, paramilitary forces barreled down the streets of Ferguson, Missouri, following the gruesome police killing of unarmed Black teenager Michael Brown.
