But billionaires and big corporations, and the politicians they bankroll, are working around the clock to take that away from us. They distract and divide us from one another, stoking fear so we won’t notice how they’ve captured our democracy.
The bedrock principle of democracy is that the person with the most votes wins. That rule applies whether you win by one vote or one million: in either case, the majority decides. But right now, Minnesota House Republicans are working to override voters’ wishes by attempting to pull off a power grab on a scale that our state has never seen before.
In September, we asked every candidate running for the Minnesota Legislature to pledge to protect democracy in five simple ways: to accept the certified election results of their race, to abstain from inciting political violence, to denounce intimidation against our election judges, to support the checks and balances defined in the U.S. Constitution, and to uphold the principles of democracy.
