Netflix: A League Of Its Own (NASDAQ:NFLX)
Investment Thesis Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) has created sustainable competitive advantages due to 15 years of investments and innovation. Other than maybe Disney (DIS), I do not expect any other competitor to create a meaningfully profitable streaming business. The decline in competition, in addition to the "Netflix effect", will drive further revenue and profit margin growth in the years ahead. My biggest concern is valuation, which has kept me from adding to my position for the last several months.
Costco Stock: I Can't Defend A 40x P/E (NASDAQ:COST)
Investment Thesis Costco (NASDAQ:COST) has a wonderful business that is managed well. The only thing I don't like about the stock is the price, which has kept me on the sidelines for the better part of the last 2 years. For now, I'm (anxiously) sitting on my hands. About Costco Costco operates membership-based warehouses that sell branded and private-label products in a range of consumer categories.
Microsoft Stock: Still In The Early Innings (NASDAQ:MSFT)
Summary Microsoft is a dominant technology company with strong revenue growth and a solid management team. The company's cloud business is the largest revenue driver, with significant growth potential and high gross margins. Microsoft's investments in AI integration, such as Copilot, have the potential to drive higher revenue across its suite of products. Investment Thesis I cannot find any company with a more enviable market position than Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT).
Comcast: Walking The Plank (NASDAQ:CMCSA)
The Businesses of Comcast If you still think of Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) as just a cable TV provider which is being threatened by "cord cutters" and tech-savvy millennials, it's time for an updated perspective. Comcast's revenue comes from 3 broad segments (which I'll cover in more detail below): Cable Communications NBCUniversal Sky These 3 segments generated ~$121.4 billion in revenue in FY22. As you can see in the image below, revenue is moderately split across these 3 segments.
Quiet Courage
The closer you look, the more you'll realize that big things are always made up of little things. Our lives are made up of days. Our careers are made up of individual projects. Our relationships are made up of small decisions. This is because the big things (our lives, careers, relationships, etc) are intangible - they're concepts. They don't "exist". And since they don't exist in the physical world, they aren't actionable. The little things, on the other hand, are tangible.
DocuSign Stock: Why I'm Not Touching It With A 10-Foot Pole (NASDAQ:DOCU)
Jun. 02, 2023 5:55 PM ETDocuSign, Inc. (DOCU)ADBE, DBX, ZM Summary DocuSign, Inc. has experienced rapid growth but has failed to create meaningful revenue leverage. The company faces increasing competition and lacks a moat, while DocuSign management issues and share dilution further dampen its investment appeal. Despite its strong product, DocuSign would need to trade at a significant discount to competitors such as Adobe Inc. to be considered an attractive investment. What is DocuSign? DocuSign, Inc.
Airbnb: Not A Commodity, But Doesn't Have A Moat Either (NASDAQ:ABNB)
May 31, 2023 8:16 AM ETAirbnb, Inc. (ABNB)BKNG, EXPE Summary Airbnb's lack of supply is leading to high ADRs and potential guests choosing other services. Its small moat, exceptional management team, and the long-term economics of its business model will lead to strong growth and improved margins. At ~$107 per share, I'd like to see the stock fall another 10-15% before getting excited about a position.
Spotify Stock: The Closer I Look, The More Bullish I Become (NYSE:SPOT)
May 25, 2023 2:39 PM ETSpotify Technology S.A. (SPOT)NFLX, TME, WMG Summary Spotify is the preeminent digital service provider as evidenced by its ubiquity, user engagement, and best-in-class product. Spotify has 4 untapped tailwinds, which should significantly increase its revenue in the next 5 years. As Spotify transitions into the next phase of its growth cycle, I fully expect it to start reigning in on operating expenses and become profitable.
Hunt Antelope, Not Field Mice
Am I hunting antelope or field mice? A lion is capable of hunting field mice, but the prize would not be sufficient reward for the energy required to do so. Instead, the lion focuses on the antelope, which require considerable energy to hunt but provide a sufficient reward. In whatever you're pursuing (a sales goal, healthy marriage, great friendship, etc), are you hunting antelope or field mice? Are you focusing on the big, important tasks that will provide sufficient reward for your energy?

How Justin Welsh uses Twitter, LinkedIn, email, and 2 simple ecourses to create a 7-figure income Justin Welsh is responsible for thousands of people quitting their 9-5s and pursuing solopreneurship, myself included. Prior to building online, Justin was the VP of Sales at PatientPop. After growing it to $50mm ARR in 10 years, he had a massive panic attack and knew it was time to quit his corporate job and build something for himself. He's been doing pretty well since then...
4 Easy Habits to "Win the Morning"
While I'm not one for clichés, I'm not feeling particularly creative this morning. Plus, they tend to be fairly accurate, which I guess is how they end up becoming clichés in the first place. → Mornings that lack intentionality lead to days that follow suit. Don't worry, I'm not going to give you a "revolutionary" 32-step morning routine to help you "win the morning". Mine is only 4 steps. Here are 2 "Dos" and 2 "Don'ts" to help you succeed shortly after waking. Sleep is the lead domino in your life.
How to Get Rich (as a Solopreneur)
There are 2 categories of leverage: To deploy the second category, you first need to turn the first category 'ON'. Equity Leverage is the difference between how an owner makes money and how an employee makes money. I think of Equity Leverage like a ladder: Image created by author, © the author assumes responsibility for the provenance and copyright. The higher up the ladder, the more you are compensated based on the results you generate.
How Warren Buffett Measures Success
There are 2 ways to measure success: The Outer Scorecard The Inner Scorecard This concept is at least as old as the Stoics, but Warren Buffett (who is worth ~$100 billion) is often credited for it today: Here's the difference between the 2 scorecards, why it's important for you to have an Inner Scorecard, and how to develop your own: Most people operate by The Outer Scorecard which focuses on things like: The problem with The Outer Scorecard is twofold: It's based on extrinsic motivation.
How to Age in Reverse
After selling his company for $800 million in 2013, Bryan Johnson has spent millions of dollars to reverse his aging. His goal: "To demonstrate aging escape velocity to neutralize my aging process." aka, live forever. How's he doing?
Things That Compound
The small things are choices, the big things are results. Nobody chooses to be overweight. Nobody chooses to go bankrupt. Nobody chooses a bad marriage. Each of these is not the result of a single decision in a single moment in time (you don't become overweight by eating twice your bodyweight in ice cream in one sitting), they're the results of a series of poor decisions made over years (it's very easy to gain extra weight by eating a bowl of ice cream 3x per week for 10 years).
What if You're Already on Top of Things?
It seems many people (by which I mean me) start off each morning in a kind of "productivity debt", which they (I) must struggle to pay off throughout the day. The aim, of course, is to reach a zero balance by the end of the day... so we can wake up and do it again tomorrow. Few things feel more basic to my experience as an adult than this vague sense that I'm falling behind.
"Nothing Runs on Life Support"
Own the problems, confront reality, and make it unacceptable for anything to be on life support. I recently stumbled across an interview of a guy who built and sold a billion-dollar business.
