Rich and uplifting issue
Linda Maio Feb. 1, 2021 From the print edition Like Tweet Email Print Subscribe Donate Now Such a rich January edition deserves praise. Kudos to the “Rebel Constables,” each one of them, and to Gabriel Schivone for excellent coverage. It did me such good to read this story. And I was on the edge of my chair waiting for election results, fuming over the attempted big-money takeover of the Gunnison County Commission (“Second Citizens”). Thank you, Nick Bowlin.
Robert Pack Browning, September 16, 1940 - March 15, 2019
Robert Browning Robert Pack Browning, a strong and dedicated contributor to his community, a gifted poet, owner of Berkeley’s Talavera Ceramics and Tile, and a retired senior editor at the University of California Bancroft Library’s Mark Twain Papers, died Friday, March 15th while swimming in rough waters in Baja Mexico. He was 78. Rob was born and raised in Salt Lake City where his ancestors crossed with the first Mormon wagon train.
Opinion: Berkeley’s new programs are getting the homeless rehoused. Vote 'yes' on Measure P to expand these initiatives
Measure P will replicate the successful soda tax to ensure funds are appropriately used. It places a 1% surcharge on high real estate transactions to help those in need regain housing and rebuild their lives. Many people think homelessness is a problem that cannot be solved. And it’s no wonder. Berkeley’s citizens are generous and compassionate, yet still the crisis deepens.
Opinion: Celebrate $15 minimum wage for Berkeley workers
Today Berkeley ushers in a $15/hour minimum wage. How we got here is a good reminder of how we can work together on important issues instead of attacking each other on ideologies. On Oct. 1, 2018 Berkeley workers started earning $15 an hour. Berkeley is only one of about 21 cities across the nation that have adopted $15 minimum wages. In August of 2016, Berkeley unanimously passed the second fastest minimum wage in the nation.
Guest commentary: Helping our homeless, but also providing safe sidewalks for all
Caring for people, especially those who are less fortunate, who do not have homes in which to sleep and keep their belongings, is a core value for Berkeley. Caring for our shared public spaces, maintaining basic cleanliness, safe surroundings and a welcoming environment for everyone is also important to us. We need to attend to both. Problematic street behaviors are intimidating and drive away residents and visitors alike, often resulting in less compassion for the homeless.
