Guest commentary: A mother's role in advancing shared parenting in Missouri
On this Mothers Day, Missouri has much for which to be thankful. We became the fifth state to pass Shared Parenting legislation in 2023. Shared parenting advocates are pro-mom and dad! But they are especially pro-children! Motherhood is a blessing to me, and I will readily admit that the challenges of working and nurturing children at home are hard to handle all the time. Of course, thats the beauty of shared parenting, sharing those responsibilities.
Russian military's crimes against humanity cannot stand
Editorial It's unclear what exactly prompted Russian President Vladimir Putin to invade the sovereign nation of Ukraine in February 2022. What is clear is that he is directing and allowing Russian troops to commit atrocities and war crimes against the Ukrainian people. All war is hell, but much of what the Russians are doing is not waging war on a military enemy. These are not accidents. They are deliberate attempts to erase Ukraine and the Ukrainian culture.
Thanks for supporting shared parenting in Missouri
Opinion With the passage and signing of SB 35, equal shared parenting will become the presumption after divorce or separation. It will now be assumed that fit and willing parents will get equal time with their children. Children and families will benefit greatly with this change. Children do not have to feel abandoned by one parent and extended family. The original family is just rearranged, not eliminated.
Redhawks hammer thrower takes home championship
Editorial Congratulations are in order to Southeast Missouri State University hammer thrower Logan Blomquist. The senior recently won his event in the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, throwing a personal best 73.37 meters. But his path to a championship didn't come easy. Blomquist's first three throws were less impressive -- 70.54 meters, scratch and 70.51 meters.
Today we celebrate Valentine's Day, a holiday dedicated to the celebration of love and marriage. The day is often marked by the giving of Valentines — cards, flowers, chocolates and nice dinners all favorites. But there is a powerful story behind it all, one of deep conviction and, indeed, love. The Roman priest Valentine was sentence to die Feb. 14 about A.D. 270. His crime: Defying a Roman edict and marrying couples in secret.
Pro-life groups launch new program focused on healing, grace
There's a new program coming on board locally designed to help women who have had an abortion, and it's being delivered by two excellent organizations. Options for Women and Birthright have partnered to start Releasing Grace Ministries, a not-for-profit outreach to help women who have had an abortion find peace, healing and grace. The pro-life organization uses a biblically-based approach to walk women through the nine-week program.
Cape hospitals have new COVID-19 testing capabilities
Cape Girardeau's hospitals have made progress in recent weeks with new testing capabilities for COVID-19. SoutheastHEALTH recently announced it has been approved by three national testing companies to perform COVID-19 rapid result molecular and serology testing. The rapid response molecular testing can identify more expeditiously if someone is infected with COVID-19.
Domestic abuse during pandemic
Governor Mike Parson has asked Missourians to stay at home to slow the spread of the Covid-19 virus. As a survivor of intimate partner violence, I worry about those who are isolated in spaces that could put them at increased risk of domestic and intimate partner violence. In an average month, 53 American women are shot and killed by their intimate partners, but these are not normal times.
King of confusion Coronavirus response defies common sense
Corona means crown, which makes sense because it's definitely presented itself as the king of confusion. So many mixed messages, and I know I'm not alone when I say that enough is enough. I'm all about taking precautions and using wisdom, but I'm not into ridiculousness, and there's plenty of that right now. Let's start with the nonstop commercials ordering people to stay home. They're maddening, and I don't even watch television much.
Congratulations to Cape superintendent Neil Glass
Cape Girardeau School District superintendent Neil Glass was recently recognized with the Missouri Association of School Administrators (MASA) New Superintendent Award for the Southeast District. The honor is reserved for superintendents in their second or third year. Glass has been in his current position since July 2017 and previously served the district as assistant superintendent for administrative services.
Happy Father’s Day: A Tale of Two Girls
Ava and Suzie are both 10 years old and live just a few miles apart. Unfortunately, both their sets of parents are divorcing. Research shows that Ava will likely have difficulties but adjust pretty well because she has equal time with both of her parents, who themselves have shared responsibility for her. Suzie, however, may have to watch her parents fight as they spend too much money on legal bills and become angrier with each other.
Linda Reutzel: Thank you, Michelle Obama!
Thank you, Michelle Obama! As a mother of a divorced dad who’s been fighting for shared parenting legislation, I’d like to thank our former first lady for her insensitive and cavalier remarks concerning divorced dads and parenting when she compared the Trump era to "living with divorced dad." In just one riveting sound bite, Michelle Obama brought to light the dangerous misperceptions that our family courts and legislators have about parenting and divorce.
