Turkey Day Wisdom • November 20, 2018 • Issue #1161 EDITOR'S PEN Turkey Day Wisdom Here's hoping you have the best holiday possible—that is having a shame-free, guilt-free, worry-free time and maybe even rest a little. It couldn’t hurt. Let the in-laws share in the cooking details, let your sister have dinner at her place, heck, even order in or go out to a restaurant. Here is a list of principals to ensure a guilt-free holiday: I am entitled to take care of myself. I am worthy of a break.
Asian Art Celebrates the Year of the Dog
In the East Asian lunar calendar, it’s the year of the Earth Dog, and in its honor, we’ve assembled some of our favorite works of dog-centric Asian art. According to Chinese astrologers, Dog is a true companion—loyal, honest, intelligent and with a strong sense of right and wrong. (This year’s earth element is reported to make for a gentler dog.) The netsuke—a tiny work of functional art, carved from a variety of materials—is a quintessentially Japanese object.
Artful Selfies with Dogs
Throughout the course of art history, self-portraiture has been an irresistible exercise for artists as different as Rembrandt van Rijn in the 17th century and Frida Kahlo in the 20th, two of the genre’s most prolific practitioners. (Rembrandt is said to have created nearly 100, while Kahlo painted 55.) Kahlo, one of Mexico’s great artists, once remarked, “I paint self-portraits because I am so often alone, because I am the person I know best.” Yet, not all artists are solitary.
Ceramic Cuteware: Heidi Bekebrede’s Tiny Dogs
It's easy to imagine these miniature vessels coming to life at night on their shelves, breaking into song and dance in a Looney Tunes moment of … cuteness. Heidi Bekebrede is the Northern California multimedia and ceramic artist who crafts this Cuteware collection. She tells us that her inspiration “is my desire to convey the joyful feeling that is evoked by the Silly Symphony cartoons from the 1930s.
Laika-Her Legacy the Power of the Small
November 3 marks the anniversary of the first animal in orbit. Sixty years ago, on November 3, 1957, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics placed a little dog named Laika into space orbit. An authentic pioneer, she traveled in true Star Trek fashion where no sentient being had gone before (the Soviets had sent other animals into space, but Laika was the first to achieve full orbital status).
Laika-Power of the Small
Sixty years ago, on November 3, 1957, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics placed a little dog named Laika into space orbit. An authentic pioneer, she traveled in true Star Trek fashion where no sentient being had gone before (the Soviets had sent other animals into space, but Laika was the first to achieve full orbital status). The accomplishment, while impressive, came at a very high cost, one that was almost certainly not worth paying.
Classic Doghouse: from Frank Lloyd Wright
The world’s only Frank Lloyd Wright–designed doghouse—a quirky footnote in the iconic architect’s seven-decade career— had a leaky roof and was snubbed by the dog it was intended to shelter. It does, however, have a charming origin story. In the early 1950s, Robert Berger of San Anselmo, Calif., asked Wright to design a family home that was “expandable, inexpensive and easy for one person to build.” Wright agreed, drafting a set of plans for a prototype of what he came to call his Usonian homes.
Dangers of Ignoring Cataract Symptoms
You See an Old Man or share one of your own You see an old man Drooling in his wheelchair. I see a man who could make almost anything With scrap metal from the junk pile. You see an old man Who speaks only when spoken to. I see a man who told exciting stories Of his encounters with grizzly bears and getting lost in the mountains. You see an old man Whose speech is garbled and confused. I see a man who sang hymn after hymn by memory To keep himself awake while driving through the night.
Some ABCs for Every Alzheimer's Caregiver
A: Accept that some of the hardest decisions you will ever have to make lie ahead. For example, when does nursing home care become the best or, perhaps, the only option? B: Be a creative problem solver. When I needed Mom to go to daycare, I persuaded her thatshe would be there to help others. The result? Her amazing shift from stubborn refusal topleasurable anticipation. C: Care for yourself.
Hounds of Imperial China
When 27-year-old Giuseppe Castiglione boarded the sailing ship that would carry him from Italy to China, he probably had no idea that he would spend the rest of his adult life there, embraced by emperors and immersed in a culture very different from his own. Born in 1688 in Milan, Castiglione began studying art as a youth, learning to paint at the renowned Botteghe degli Stampatori studio.
Caregiver Guilt and Finding Balance
Lord make me like a mighty oak Roots curling into the earth Strong and steady That my Love might lean upon me And rest Lord make me like a mighty oak Flexible enough to sway in the wind Rocking gently That my Love might rock with me And be comforted Lord make me like a mighty oak Speaking as the winds blow through Whispering softly That my Love might listen And be soothed Lord make me like a mighty oak Facing even the fiercest storm Standing Tall That my Love might take shelter And draw...
