Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Covering the Busan International Film Festival. One of those moments when your press badge speaks to you and says nice things.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

I did and then I broke it. It was the wild tantrum of a 7-year-old.

How is social media changing news?

Bite-sized journalism is here and it's definitely here to stay. Your headline is often the whole of your visible content so make it good.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Bridget Jones.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Journalism is personal. It's sharing knowledge in a way that only you can spin it.

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram for the cats. Twitter for Hallyu.

Who do you wish followed you?

Music producers. LDN Noise. Ryan S. Jhun. The crafters behind the glam.

Why did you become a journalist?

Accidentally! Someone reached out to me on Twitter because they liked my casual blog content. Then it because what I like to. What I love.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope. I was in orchestra. Find my words in long discarded program notes.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Practice your craft and be persistent. Also, give yourself a break. You're going to flub up. Learn from it and be better.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Whenever I'm awake. I'm in KST and I'll check social and email throughout the day.

What's your favorite drink?

Chocolate milk. Oh, you mean alcohol? Yeah, don't imbibe all that often. Hand me an Odell's 90 Shilling and call me a snob.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Playing Animal Crossing. (I'm late to the game.) Or exploring walking trails. Or discovering new coffee shops. Seoul loves its coffee shops.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

Does Twitter count? Partially joking, and partially not. I cross consume from AP to Vogue to HUFF. Short attention span and too much content.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That journalists are just people who want to get close to idols. Our knowledge, analysis, and understanding of Hallyu is overlooked.
