Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Leicester Mercury trainee.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, it was awful.

How is social media changing news?

People believe anything. Maintaining the integrity of real journalism is paramount to reversing/overcoming it. And destroying clickbait.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

Wanting to inform (the truth IS out there) and feeling a responsibility to do so. And still managing to dig and inform with integrity.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

An inquisitive brain, shorthand, a pen and pad. And a phone and laptop.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook. I am nosey.

Who do you wish followed you?

Stephen Sondheim

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Wrote and edited it.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Dig. Have integrity. Don't write, craft. Perfect your style yet keep learning. And question everything.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime I'm awake.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Anything using phrases including "reach out to you", "will excite your readers" or spelling my name incorrectly!

What's your favorite drink?

Really? We still have the "drinkers" stereotype?

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Guardian
