Lauren McGaughy’s Biography

I am an experienced reporter with in-depth knowledge of state politics, national trends and international affairs. I have covered the Legislature in two states, one presidential election and foreign policy in Washington, DC.

Starting in February 2025, I will be covering Texas politics for The New York Times. Based in Austin, I focus on crime and punishments and LGBTQ rights. Previously, I covered Texas politics at the NPR member station in Austin, The Dallas Morning News and The Houston Chronicle, and Louisiana politics for NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune.

In Washington, I was the U.S. Department of State reporter for the Asahi Shimbun, the world's second largest newspaper, where I focused on U.S.-Sino and U.S.-Korean relations. I covered three UN General Assemblies as well as multiple track-II meeting here.
