Review – Brave the Dark - Geeks Under Grace
I’ve spilled a great deal of ink in recent years digging into the socio-political implications of the works of Angel Studios. Frankly, I’m kind of sick of it. From courting political partisans on both sides of the aisle to questionable pay-it-forward methods that allegedly result in sold-out but empty theaters, Angel Studios has partially built its reputation on controversy.
Review – Piece By Piece - Geeks Under Grace
Morgan Neville has endured an unusual rise in the history of documentary filmmakers. He became one of America’s only celebrity documentarians with his critically acclaimed 2018 film Won’t You Be My Neighbor?, which took on heightened importance as an expression of kindness and neighborliness in the heat of the culture wars of the time. His other work is quite excellent as well.
Classic Review — Martin Luther’s Commentary On Galatians (1535) - Geeks Under Grace
I’ve been on a long discernment path with my faith for the past six years. After being baptized in a megachurch in October 2019, I’ve spent years trying to understand the nature of my beliefs and interrogate various ideas.
Review - Fallout: Season 1
The existence of a Fallout TV show has been a dubious proposition since it was first announced. In the past 15 years, the popular video game franchise has gone from one of the most beloved in the world —popularized by Fallout 3 (2008) and Fallout: New Vegas (2010) — to one of its most frustrating and controversial — due to the scandalous release of Fallout 76 (2018).
Review — How To Use The Book Of Common Prayer - Geeks Under Grace
When I joined the Anglican tradition, it was the culmination of a years-long religious journey, wherein I was grappling with years of quiet dissatisfaction with my evangelical upbringing. I felt out of touch with my family’s megachurch roots and wanted a traditional church with hymnbooks and more comprehensive theology. After years of visiting churches, I found what I was looking for in the Anglican and Episcopal church. What most drew me most into those traditions was the Book of Common Prayer.
Should Christians Watch The Simpsons?
By Alyssa Charpentier, GUG Contributor This article was edited to Geeks Under Grace standards, and the personal opinions of this author are not necessarily that of Geeks Under Grace. They’re an all-American dysfunctional family, and they’ve recently been greenlit for their 36th season on television. Household head Homer Simpson, Duff Beer enthusiast and food fanatic, embarks on misadventures alongside his forbearing wife, Marge.
Surprising Parallels Between the King of Kaiju and King of Kings
By Alyssa Charpentier, GUG Contributor This article was edited to Geeks Under Grace standards, and the personal opinions of this author are not necessarily that of Geeks Under Grace. “He is the symbol of a world gone wrong… a merciless undertaker who broaches no deals.” (Mark Jacobson, New York Magazine) Spawned as a legend and mutated into a legacy, Godzilla, king of the monsters, gained prevalence as one of cinema’s most beloved creatures.
Review – Asteroid City - Geeks Under Grace
Writer/director Wes Anderson has become ridiculously talented at creating the exact kind of film he is known for making. In the past five years, he’s released three successful films, and that is accounting for two years of pandemic lockdown.
Review – The Sound of Freedom - Geeks Under Grace
There has been a lot of buzz in the past week about the release of the new Angel Studios film The Sound of Freedom, which was released on July 4th and almost immediately earned its budget back through strong word of mouth. The movie almost immediately drew controversy. It outgrossed Indiana Jones and The Dial of Destiny the Tuesday night it came out, leading many culture warriors to declare the tiny Christian film was outperforming the massive Disney blockbuster.
A Brief Introduction To The Church Fathers
I have been thinking about the church fathers a lot lately. As an Anglican, my tradition sits at the intersection of the historic Christian traditions — a via media or “middle way” between the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant traditions. We affirm Sola Scriptura and Sola Fida, but we also value the historic views of the patristics. These two instincts need not be in direct confrontation.
The Best and Worst Films of 2022
As 2022 comes to an end, it’s interesting to look back on the year that was, and what it amounted to in the world of cinema. It marked a return of confidence back in theatres; some months were barren of a strong selection of wide releases, while others featured tentpole films. Two movies in particular (try and guess which ones) were especially singled out as must-sees on the big screen.
Review – The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special - Geeks Under Grace
The beginning of Marvel Phase 5 has brought back the most beloved team in the Marvel Cinematic Universe! The Guardians of the Galaxy is arguably the best individual franchise the MCU has cooked up since the entire enterprise began back in 2008. That’s impressive because this franchise has delivered some fun entries like Iron Man, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, The Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok, Black Panther, Spiderman: No Way Home, and more.
Classic Review - The Ballad of the White Horse (1911)
I am a member of the Nashville branch of the Society of G.K. Chesterton and earlier this year I proposed that the group ought to read the author’s seminal work of epic poetry — which at the time I’d never read. I have the distinction of being one of the lone non-Catholics in the group which puts me in an interesting place.
Review – Orwell: Keeping an Eye on You - Geeks Under Grace
Developer: Osmotic Studios Publisher: Fellow Traveler Genre: Adventure, Simulation Platforms: PC, Mac, iOS Rating: M for Mature Price: $9.99 (PC and Mac); $4.99 (iOS) Indie developer Osmotic Studios have, to this date anyway, only two titles to their name, both under the Orwell franchise. Both deal with the titular Orwell: an omniscient surveillance system with access to just about everything the citizens of the Nation do and say, whether online or off.
