Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

I was a researcher and writer at the Boston Business Journal.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Of course!

How is social media changing news?

It’s made everyone think they are a journalist.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email

What's your favorite social network?

Instagram

Why did you become a journalist?

I wanted to be a storyteller. It also seemed exciting and worthy.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

We were a very small school so we barely had a paper, but yes. Granby, Massachusetts.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

The ones that people share with their moms and dads.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Write, write, write. And take fiction writing classes. They make you a better writer overall.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

The best pitch was for a story from a new student who had created a documentary about his friend who was dying of muscular dystrophy.

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

Not one in particular, but anyone who pitches an education story that has no link to the work we so.

What's your favorite drink?

Tea. Always tea.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

Reading, hanging out with my son, or at a show (music and theater!) with friends!

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Atlantic and The New Yorker
