The Inspector Calls - March 2023
Each month, Inside Time lists the latest inspection reports for UK prisons.
Making custody and community supervision safer and fairer
You may have come across the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman (PPO), as you or someone you know might have complained to us. Also, you should have seen our posters and leaflets around the prison wings, read our articles for Inside Time or heard our advertisements on National Prison Radio. If you have not heard of us, we are the independent assessor for prisoner complaints and a place for you to appeal if you remain unhappy with the prison’s response to your complaints.
YCG offers another innovation – this time in apprenticeship provision
YCG Academy has joint ventured with Multi Trades Training (MTT) for the provision of a mobile construction industry training and apprenticeship solution for serving prisoners and prison leavers. MTT provides mobile construction apprenticeship training to employers, allowing candidates to be assessed on site rather than having to send them toattend a college to beassessed.
Working from home on release
Tax break Many of you on release may set up your business from home, and I thought it would be useful to explore the expenditure that could be recovered as a deductible expense. Even established businesses can claim that they work from home during the week undertaking such work as estimates, billings, business calls, meeting clients, filing storage or simply to bring their accounts up to date.
Need the Parole Board to agree to your release? Let us help you and then build a life that keeps you out of prison
In less than 5 years, New Connections has grown and we now work with over 200 IPP and Lifer prisoners, and some with long determinate sentences. Some are still in prison and many are now building lives in the community. We assist them with their addiction issues and parole hearings, and help ensure their release is a success story. We work in over 70 of the UK’s prisons and with many lawyers dedicated to assisting these cases.

Menopause… what it is and why EVERYONE needs to know (and talk) about it! (Part 1)
So, if menopause is this month’s Inside Health topic, are you going to skip over this page? Hopefully not, because it’s likely that even if you’re not one of the 13 million women in the UK who are going through it or has gone through it, you will have a mother, an aunt, a friend, a sister or someone who will be working with you in the prison or in the community who is experiencing one or possibly many of the symptoms of menopause.
