Review: King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard @ Bristol Beacon
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard (KGLW) have come a long way since they last performed in Bristol eight years ago. Since then, they have built an extensive catalogue of albums now 25 strong, creating a diverse community of dedicated fans who are consistently being provided with completely new sounds from the band. Consequently, walking into Bristol Beacon, I had no idea what to expect despite seeing them only a year prior.
'My feeling is the insanity is increasing' - in conversation with Kickboy
‘I will be astounded if you extract anything usable’ lead singer Jamie texts me after chatting with him and a few of the members of KickBoy over Zoom. It’s not usually the sign of a good interview. In this case, however, it definitely was. The chaos begins quickly.
Review: Faye Webster @ SWX
By Anna Dodd, Second Year, English Literature Hailed for her witty lyricism and jazzy instrumental eccentricity, Faye Webster’s soft vocals breezily cruised through SWX’s sound system, face framed by her iconic wolf cut. Taking the success of her consistently critically acclaimed albums in her stride, Webster took to the stage of her largest Bristol venue yet – having previously performed at the more intimate Thekla.
“Connection is everything”: how a Bristol music collective is restoring community to the local music scene
By Susie Long, Music Subeditor It’s no secret that making music has become a commercial endeavour. With ticket prices for high-profile artists soaring into the thousands, and the rise of the “industry plant” artist, the music industry can sometimes seem like a faceless, algorithmic entity. However, people want to change this, and groups are emerging with the aim to prioritise the celebration of community, inclusivity, and creativity within music.
Bristol student protests against Forced Swim Test with a 'floating banner'
By William Budd, First Year, History A University of Bristol undergraduate demonstrated against the use of Forced Swim Test by university researchers on the grounds ‘of animal cruelty.’ A first-year philosophy undergraduate has expressed her desire to see the Forced Swim Test halted immediately in a demonstration inside the social space of Senate House.
Bristol students raise concerns on ‘exploitative landlords’ and ‘extremely dangerous’ mould in new SU Housing Report
By Cara Hene, Digital Music Editor Beginning on January 29, the Bristol SU’s Housing Report 2024 surveyed 570 responses from current students to find out about the state of student housing in the most expensive rental city outside of London. 83 per cent of students said that their housing conditions were impacting them.
Review: SCALER @ SWX
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology This would be the fourth time I’d seen SCALER, so entering SWX I thought I had a good idea of what was coming. I honestly couldn’t had been further from it; this was by far the most ambitious show I’ve seen from them. Their loudest sound, their wildest visual production too. The night started almost immediately after doors, with electronic artist and producer Thomas Ridley kicking starting the evening with an impressively fluid set.
Review: Lip Critic @ The Louisiana
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology It’s always exciting walking into a venue with little idea of what to expect from the act you’re seeing. With the fiery intensity of the handful of singles they had released for their debut album Hex Dealer, the only thing I was certain of was that this was going to be a full-on show. That anticipation was maintained by the two thrilling Bristol-based support acts who kicked off the evening in an energetic style.
Simple Things 2024
By Epigram Music and curated by Dylan McNally, Music Co-Deputy Editor In all the best ways Bristol is a weird city. And that's certainly true of its music scene, which is home to some of the most exciting, forward-thinking bands in the country. Bristol's also home to a fair few festivals throughout the year, but Simple Things might be the one that reflects its state of being, and its music scene, the best. It is Bristol in a festival.
Epigram Music's Top 100 Songs of 2023
By Featured Writers for Epigram Music, curated by Susie Long, Music Subeditor As another year comes to an end, the Epigram Music team have been contemplating the songs that, for us, have defined this year. Review: Model/Actriz @ Dareshack
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology Entering the venue, I felt a unique energy and anticipation from the crowd gathered outside the stage room. For many, this was their first time seeing Model/Actriz, given that this was their 7th ever show in the UK, and their first in Bristol. I overheard conversations about their unique, complex sound, and how it would be recreated in a live setting.
Review: Mandy, Indiana @ Dareshack
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology It’s been just over a year since my first encounter with Mandy, Indiana. Supporting Gilla Band at The Trinity Centre, the mere 30 minutes they had on stage left a huge impression on me. I hadn’t quite heard a sound like it before, some strange noisy rave fronted by a tense vocalist who gradually let loose with the bands progressively fiercer sound. I left the gig only wanting more, and since then, their thrilling debut album i’ve seen a way has sustained this.
Review: Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs @ SWX
By Louis Amor, Third Year Zoology Having seen Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs Pigs only a few weeks prior to this show, I walked into the venue with immense excitement knowing I would probably leave very sweaty and with my ears loudly ringing. This would be the exact state I left in a few hours later! The evening opened with two fantastically engaging support acts who brought a great energy to a steadily growing crowd.
