Resurrecting my legacy ASRock ION330HT nettop
A couple of weeks after my previous post regarding the demise of my two legacy laptops, my legacy ASRock ION330HT nettop failed to boot. It seems bad luck does come in threes. In that post I described how I had connected the nettop’s eSATA port to each of the 2.5″ HDDs salvaged from my two dead laptops in order to remove the ATA Security password, repartition and reformat the HDDs, then put them in external USB HDD cases for general use.
After using Gentoo Linux and KDE for 15 years I have switched to Lubuntu (LXQt)
The demise of my laptops Recently both my laptops – a ten-year-old 14″ Clevo W230SS running the stable version of Gentoo Linux, and a fifteen-year-old 15.6″ Compal NBLB2 running the testing version of Gentoo Linux – died. The Clevo laptop was my main machine. They had been heavily used in succession for work and personal tasks for more than a decade in several countries and hot climates, so I was not surprised when they finally packed up.
Replacing XScreenSaver with XSecureLock for the lock screen in Lubuntu 22.04
LXQt in Lubuntu 22.04 uses XScreenSaver to provide both the screen saver and lock screen, and XScreenSaver appears to be tightly integrated with LXQt. My family had the following configuration for the screensaver and for session locking in their individual user accounts on the family desktop computer: 1. XScreenSaver was installed by default in Lubuntu 22.04. 2.
Installing TrueType font files in Lubuntu 22.04
Yesterday I looked through some old CDROMs with a view to disposing of them. I came across one from 2001 from a company called Focus Multimedia Limited, titled ‘4,000 fonts – A comprehensive collection of stylish and professional fonts’ for Windows 95 / 98 / Me / NT / 2000 / XP. It is still readable and contains both PostScript and TrueType font files, as well as a Windows application called BOSS Font Manager to view the fonts.
Installing the Interactive Deep Colorization application in Linux
There are plenty of articles and videos on the Web regarding colourising old black and white photographs. Some of the resulting colourised photographs look amazing. Several Web sites offer free or commercial automated colourisation of B&W photographs using AI (artificial intelligence) techniques. The free-use sites watermark the result or limit the size of the original image. Some of the resulting colourised images are reasonable, others not so good.
Using WS-Discovery to enable Windows 10 to browse SMB shares in my home network of Linux computers
I have not used Windows 10 for more than two years now (see ‘Bye bye Windows 10, and good riddance‘ regarding my failed attempts to upgrade Windows 10 Version 1607 to 1703 and 1709). Nevertheless I am aware that, since Version 1709, Windows 10 no longer has SMBv1 and Computer Browser service installed by default. Computer Browser service used NetBIOS and SMBv1 to provide what Microsoft named ‘My Network Places‘ or ‘Network Neighborhood’.
Investigating an OpenVPN connection problem in Gentoo Linux and Lubuntu 22.04 but not in Android 13
Investigating an OpenVPN connection problem in Gentoo Linux and Lubuntu 22.04 but not in Android 13 Back in 2020 I successfully used OpenVPN to access a remote server from my laptop and from my smartphone. Fast forward to 2023 and I needed to use OpenVPN again to access the same remote server. Again I could access the remote server when connecting from my smartphone, now running Android 13, using the OpenVPN client app.
Using adb tools in Linux to remove bloatware from my Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra
Samsung included a lot of bloatware on my Galaxy Note 20 Ultra 5G, and it is not possible to uninstall it using Play Store. However, it is possible to remove this stuff using adb tools. I got rid of the bloatware I don’t want very easily using the Linux version of the adb tools. I have never had a Facebook account and never will, so I decided to remove all trace of it as follows: 1.
Implementing a scheme for system-wide automatic Suspend to RAM in Lubuntu 20.10
Lubuntu 20.10 is installed on my family’s desktop PC (single-seat, multi-user). This version of the distribution uses the SDDM display manager and the LXQt desktop environment. Previously the machine had Lubuntu 18.04 installed, which used the LightDM display manager and the LXDE desktop environment.
Work-around if movie subtitles restart after the final subtitle is displayed
If I’m watching movies in a language I don’t understand, I want subtitles. On my computers this is possible as long as there is a subtitles file with the name suffix .srt and the same prefix name as the .mp4 video file in the same directory. I usually prefer to view movies on my TV with a bigger screen, so I copy the movie to a HDD that is normally connected to my TV (a FINLUX model 43-FUD-8020).
Prevent Lubuntu 22.04 (SDDM and LXQt) from leaving an external drive mounted incorrectly for other users
An external USB disk drive is connected permanently to my family’s PC that currently has Lubuntu 22.04 installed. There are several user accounts on this multi-user single-seat machine. If a user does not unmount the external drive before logging out, when another user logs in, the external drive is still mounted with the priviledges of the previous user.
