Managerial merry-go-rounds and coaching clangers: (recent) football’s worst managerial misfits
By Luca Hughes Joshi Editor’s note: We have no doubt that Ange Postecoglou’s month long reign at Nottingham Forest would have made Luca’s excellent list. Unfortunately, his tenure clung on marginally too long past our deadline – perhaps the only success of his time at the City Ground. Sacked; mutual consent; given his P-45. Say it how you will, the ever-present media discourse surrounding managerial sackings is rather indicative of the ‘hire and fire’ culture of modern-day football.
A game of two halves: the England football manager should always be English
By Luca Hughes Joshi and James Jones In a new feature included in every print edition, two writers take part in a head-to-head debate surrounding a key issue in the world of sport. This week, we asked Satire Editor Luca Hughes Joshi, and Sport Contributor James Jones whether they agreed or disagreed with the statement: The England football manager should always be English Yes (Luca Hughes Joshi, Satire Editor): Picture a version of England where Germans have all positions of responsibility.
BREAKING: Klute closes down after 40 years of operation
By Elliot Burrin, Will Dixon and Luca Hughes Joshi Palatinate understands that Klute, a popular Durham nightclub on Elvet Bridge, has closed after 40 years of operation. The nightclub shut on 20th April, although no public announcement has yet been made, and it is unclear whether the closure is permanent or short term. Palatinate has contacted Tokyo Industries – the owners of Klute – for comment, but has not yet heard a response.
Shhh while shagging on Valentines Day
By Luca Hughes Joshi Valentine’s Day can be a sobering day for some. Not literally. For most of those sad, lonely creatures like yours truly, it turns out to be a big piss up. Some of us don’t spend the day with red roses, candlelit dinners, chocolate shaped hearts, sexual intercourse, and other soppy, clichéd “traditions”. The most female contact I’ve had on Valentine’s Day? Going for dinner with my grandma in a Lancashire restaurant in 2019.
A college-cest digest
By Luca Hughes Joshi As a man who has never had, nor currently does have a relationship, you may be confused to see me writing about the wacky world of romance. So am I. Nonetheless, you must be wondering what a dashingly handsome (look at the editorial photo – phwoar) and prolifically charismatic man like me would be doing without a girlfriend (the Snap’s luca_hj for anyone wishing to change that). Now that’s a very good question.
DWFC: spectacular Sheffield shootout
By Luca Hughes Joshi Palatinate continues its coverage of Durham Women – this time their home fixture versus Sheffield United in the FA Women’s League Cup. For those unfamiliar with the format of the competition, it is fairly complex compared to its men’s counterpart. Instead of going straight into a knockout round, the tournament commences with a group stage – with three groups of five teams and two groups of four.
Non-league in the North East
By Luca Hughes Joshi When I arrived in Durham two months ago, one of the things highest on my agenda was to get a sample of some of the North East’s football offering. The priority was to explore football at its purest – the wonderful world of floodlight failures, dodgy dugouts and treacherous toilets that is, of course, England’s non-league pyramid.
