Commentary: Police reform in Davis
By Gloria Partida and Lucas Frerichs Special to The Enterprise As we reflect on the senseless deaths of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, Stephon Clark and so many other Black lives at the hands of police brutality, Americans are struggling to find answers to stop the graphic visions of Black men and women needlessly dying throughout our country.
Commentary: PG&E exit fees? OK, but let’s be fair
By Lucas Frerichs and Tom Stallard Special to The Enterprise In a disappointing decision, the California Public Utilities Commission recently voted to approve increases to the “exit fees” charged to Valley Clean Energy customers by PG&E. Valley Clean Energy is our official locally governed electricity provider, bringing cleaner energy at competitive rates to Davis, Woodland, and unincorporated Yolo County. It began serving 55,000 customer accounts this past June.
Measure L helps meet critical need
Providing our seniors with housing options specifically designed for a changing lifestyle will allow Davis to retain its baby boomers and their valuable contributions to our community. Yolo County has 35,000 Baby Boomers at or nearing retirement age. Approximately 25 percent of Davis’s homes are owned by this generation, many of whom live in houses larger than necessary or desired.
Rural internet program will help Yolo’s residents
Within Davis city limits, high-speed broadband is fairly readily available. However, we know that even in Davis, there is a need for improvements in high-speed broadband, and the city is examining possible solutions to this issue through the work of its Broadband Advisory Task Force. Here in the city, we are fortunate to have the density to justify the infrastructure needed.
Rental resources ordinance meets tenant, neighborhood needs
A surprising statistic about Davis is that the majority of residents are renters. In addition, nearly one-third of all “single-family homes” are rental properties. The recent passage of a comprehensive city of Davis rental resources ordinance represents a significant achievement for the entire Davis community (including tenants, landlords and neighbors) at a time when we’re experiencing a historically low vacancy rate (a minuscule 0.2 percent).
Undocumented residents can be at peace in Davis
In the past several weeks we have had the opportunity to meet and stand with a broad variety of members of the Davis and Yolo County community who have come together to express concerns about potential outcomes of the recent presidential election. Specifically, we have been asked to describe the commitments the city of Davis has made to its residents as a sanctuary city — something Davis has been for the past 30 years.
