Lucian Davidescu
Lucian Davidescu’s Biography
Lucian Davidescu is a Romanian journalist and publisher specializing in business, finance, economics and public policy. He has worked as a professional journalist since 2001 and has also developed websites since 1999, focusing on data architecture, semantic structures and accessible user experience. He studied journalism at the University of Bucharest.
He joined the Bucharest-based daily Business Standard as an editor in 2008 and continued managing its online successor after the newspaper's print edition ceased publication. He later acquired the platform and currently serves as executive publisher and sole owner of Standard – available in Romanian at standard.ro and English at romania.st.
Davidescu began his career as a technology and personal finance reporter at the daily newspaper Realitatea Românească. He subsequently held leadership roles in the business sections of several Romanian newspapers: Cotidianul, Evenimentul zilei and România liberă.
His other editorial and management roles have included editor-in-chief of România Curată, a Romanian investigative and public-interest journalism outlet, and project manager at Agrointeligența, a business-to-business news publication covering agriculture. He also worked as an editorial consultant for Digi24, a Romanian television news channel, where he helped develop its 3D infographic concept.
He founded Riscograma, a Romanian-language blog focused on business and economics that received the business blog award at RoBlogFest in 2010 and 2011. He has also written personal finance columns for Libertatea and the Romanian edition of Forbes. In English, he published a Substack covering the annulment of Romania's 2024 presidential election and the political developments that followed.
Alongside journalism, Davidescu has worked on public policy research with the Romanian Academic Society (Societatea Academică din România), a policy research organization. He also co-authored Romania's contribution to Freedom House's Nations in Transit 2016 report and wrote a chapter for Propaganda Made to Measure: How Our Vulnerabilities Facilitate Russian Influence, a regional study published by the GlobalFocus Center in 2018.
Davidescu has reported on government affairs, corporate practices and alleged corruption, including investigations concerning public-sector decision-making and corporate transactions. He has also been involved in litigation over his journalism. Romania's High Court of Cassation and Justice ultimately rejected a damages claim against him and requests to remove articles, in a case discussed in Romanian media in the context of press freedom and strategic lawsuits against public participation (SLAPPs).
Over the course of his career, Davidescu has appeared on more than 500 television talk shows as a commentator on politics, business and economic affairs. His appearances have included programs on Realitatea, Digi24, TVR, B1, Metropola and The Money Channel.
Davidescu's professional profiles and selected work are available through Muck Rack, ORCID and LinkedIn. His publications include Standard, and his earlier writing is available through Riscograma and his English-language Substack.
