As the year progresses at a gallop, we are getting ready for our May annual meeting, this year in Edinburgh, when I will hand over the Honorary Secretary role to Biba Stanton. As advisory groups are a large part of the work of the Hon Sec, I thought in this edition I would focus on their work, and how much they do over the year to improve treatment and services for patients with neurological illness.

TREMOR Firstly Happy New Year from the ABN! That may feel somewhat belated but this is the first edition of PN to go out since then. Hopefully all those new year resolutions are still holding firm. In the middle of January, we welcomed our new executive director, Emily Linnemann, to lead the ABN office team. She will be ably guided in getting to know the organisation by the hugely competent staff team who have been holding the fort for many months now.

CLINICAL NEUROLOGY As the Christmas lights are switched on across the UK, the annual series of events at the ABN rolls on. Last month saw the one-day autumn meeting in London. We were pleased that so many of you could make it face-to-face and those more distant were able to watch online. A massive thank you to all our excellent speakers.

NEUROSURGERY Although writing this in August 2023, it is the morning after half a month’s rain fell in the space of a few hours overnight with gale force winds into the bargain. All par for the course in an English summer. Naturally, being in a tent on the South Coast did not help the unseasonable feeling. Although we always feel the grass is metaphorically greener elsewhere, the grass is at least literally greener here in the UK.

CLINICAL NEUROLOGY As Spring in the UK sets in and the days start to lengthen, the ABN is preparing for its annual meeting in May, which this year is joint with the Irish Neurological Association and is being held in Belfast. In this era of evidence-based medicine, while treating the rarer diseases we deal with in neurology, sometimes feel we left out from clear cut answers on the best treatments for our patients and knowing what good practice looks like.
