Ignored safety concerns are still an issue for Hackney residents
The recent approval for funding of 400 new council homes has been welcomed by many as a step towards solving Hackney’s housing crisis. But the announcement has also sparked fresh divisions, with some residents saying this week that their ongoing complaints were being ignored. The project, given the green light early this year, will see construction across 14 council-owned sites; primarily targeting derelict garages and offices.
Flowerpot ‘barricades’ are causing major disruption, residents say
Locals have criticised the growing number of planter barriers, which they say are causing “chaos” on the borough’s streets. The large planters, part of the council’s low-traffic neighbourhood (LTN) schemes, aim to stop ‘rat-running’ through-traffic, cut pollution and make streets safer for walking and cycling. Made of wood or concrete, the stationary containers are typically waist-high and filled with soil, shrubs or small trees and are placed in the middle of residential roads.
The Voy testosterone campaign was dismissive of women's hormones, here's why
By declaring ‘Men get hormonal too’, Voy’s campaign positions itself as a progressive step towards normalising male hormonal health. While the message appears affirming, it exposes a familiar reality: hormonal health is only taken seriously once it belongs to men – after centuries of women being denied the same recognition.
‘Not all men’ is reductive and useless, here's why
It’s ‘not all men’ until they tell their sister to get an Uber instead of walking once it gets dark. Until they walk their female coworker to her car. Until they hire a female babysitter for their daughter rather than a male, ‘just to be safe.’ These decisions are rarely framed as accusations; they are framed as common sense. Yet, they reveal something crucial: when risk becomes personal, abstract reassurance gives way to practical caution.
Wheelchair access blocked by e-bikes left on pavements
Residents in Hackney are facing an accessibility crisis as discarded for-hire electric bikes routinely block wheelchair-friendly routes in the borough. Local resident Tracy was left shaken after her husband was trapped on the pavement for several minutes after the accessible path was blocked. She said: “He literally has to wait for someone to come and physically help him because he can’t get round them – his wheelchair can only cross at level junctions.
Laughter Therapy programme due to launch in Prideaux House
A charity centre in Church Crescent, is launching an eight-week ‘Laughter Therapy’ programme on 11 November. The programme at Prideaux House will be led by certified laughter-coach Claudia Wazziczek and aims to improve the mental wellbeing of local residents. Estelle Wilson, manager of Prideaux House, said: “We have been hoping to employ some alternative mental health support methods…When Claudia approached us, it felt like a really positive coincidence.”?
Women-only shelter to reopen at former primary school
A women-only shelter is set to reopen at a closed primary school by a Hackney homelessness charity. Hackney Doorways, a charity that offers shelter for homeless people, is in the process of taking over the former Colvestone Primary School site, which officially closed on 31 August last year. The charity’s women-only building was forced to close last year due to safety issues, leaving their unisex shelter as the only option for the homeless women of the area.

Wishes Under a Starlit Sky
Review by Kelly M, Reviewer Last updated on 21 Oct 2019 My Recommendation I have loved reading Lucy's previous books but I think this might be my favourite to date. Set between London and the stunning snowy Colorado this book just oozes with festiveness and is a hug in a book. The lovely Harper is in limbo after the unexpected end of her marriage and after a year of kicking her heels and hiding from the world, Madi decides it is time for her to take control of her life back.
Wishes Under a Starlit Sky
When life doesn’t go to plan, you can write yourself a new story… From the outside, Harper Hayes looks like she is winning at life. She has an amazing job as a script writer, a wonderful house, an awesome best friend and an incredible husband. Yes, life seems to be pretty, dare she say it? Perfect? But life is about to throw more than one spanner in the works of Harper’s picture perfect existence and at the busiest time of the year too.

Don’t compare - Lucy Knott
I’ll always remember it because one: I love the Gilmore Girls and two: I love Jack Kerouac. I remember smiling at the mere mention of his name but then also being slightly offended that she felt the need for Kerouac to edit. (I know it’s a TV show but stay with me.) I thought, how dare she criticize one of the Beat Generation’s most-loved writers, how dare she think his work needs revising.
