Top price records crumbled and averages held strong to cap off a stellar year for the breed at the National Charbray Sale at Gracemere on September 28. The new high price came late in the day when the fourth-last bull out of 106 catalogued, Wattlebray Vintage set a new breed record of $70,000.

View from the paddock: ag well on the way to ditching toxic ideas about women as homemakers Original

Changing times: More youth now volunteering for community leadership positions Original
Having grown up in a small rural community with a number of social and sporting events scheduled in the town throughout the year, the idea of joining a committee to pitch in and make these events possible came naturally to me.
Parenthood puts life into perspective
Lucy Moore, writer/grazier There was a time when I worked as many daylight hours as possible. I absolutely loved the physical aspect of making a living off the land; I still do, and it's something I yearn for deeply since starting a family.
Australian pride and motivation from the Paris 2024 Olympics
Lucy Moore, writer/grazier Whether you're a sports fanatic or not, it's near impossible to not get sucked into the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Beef Week 2024 shows how we should embrace Australian agriculture
Lucy Moore, writer grazier. Following the spectacle of Beef Week 2024, it's hard not to feel an overwhelming level of pride at being involved in such a monumental event and industry. Moreover, as one industry spokesperson said, you won't see anything like this anywhere else in the world. That much is plain to see even standing outside the main gates.

Balancing bush burnout: Mental health tips
Lucy Moore, writer/grazier Hello to March, the beginning of autumn (do we even get autumn in Queensland?) and another jam-packed month for every man and his proverbial dog. I've consumed a lot of "wellness" content lately, not by choice, or maybe my too-smart phone is more of a mind reader than I already suspect. The thing is, I've been warned about burnout from many angles over the years. From school teachers, employers, doctors, news articles, podcasts - you name it, they're talking about it.
View From the Paddock: Challenges & opportunities in 2024
Lucy Moore, writer/grazier. Happy New Year! As usual when a lovely, shiny brand new 365 days rolls around, I sit and wonder whether a crystal ball would have been a welcome Christmas present or not. Hindsight tells me no, because had I known what 2023 was about to dish up last Christmas I may have shuddered and spent the year in a safe, predictable dark room. 2023 was a rough ride for agricultural businesses - I dove into this in my previous view from the paddock brain dump.
View From the Paddock: Success is a bad teacher
Lucy Moore, writer/grazier. Lucky or unlucky, call it what you want, but I've ridden one hell of a ride during my short time doing business in agriculture. Since we set off into the sunset in this industry, my husband Bryce and I have encountered the worst drought in 100 years, followed by earth-shattering highs in both rainfall measurements and cattle prices, to now managing under the biggest market slump in almost 50 years. Phew, I'm tired writing this.
Fadi Kattan - Apartamento Magazine
Read an original recipe from Chef Fadi Kattan in Apartamento Cookbook #7, Late-Night Meals, available here. A delicious meal is an exchange, an articulation of the care and attention paid by the person who made it—and, before them, by those who have grown the produce needed to assemble each dish. In the company of others, another layer of exchange is added—between family and friends across the table. A shared meal provides rhythmic comfort and a moment of bonding.
View From the Paddock: Bull season rabbit wheel starting
Lucy Moore, writer and grazier. You can feel it in the air, the impending rush of bull sale season. It was one of my favourite aspects of my old role with this, the Bible of the Bush. The low murmurs and imperceptible scribbling from prospective clients as they do their first, second and third laps of penned lots.
All aspects of industry discussed at JK Cattle Co field day
"The whole industry needs to be successful for our breed to move forward, so we need to be banding together and trying to build each other up as much as possible for better outcomes for Brangus and the beef industry in general." "Animal health on a whole can make or break a feeding program, so things like pre-vaccination against respiratory illness and insisting on good temperaments in your cattle go along way towards securing supplier relationships," he said.
View From the Paddock: The littlest thing have the biggest impact
When I sit at my laptop to write my view from the paddock contributions, I've usually been stewing on an idea for a couple of days. This time, I came up blank. Frankly, I'm a little offended we're at the end of March when Christmas was surely yesterday and I'm wondering what I've actually achieved in the three months that have supposedly passed since my last QCL entry. So I got to wondering, what is my literal view from the paddock?
View From the Paddock: Let's meet the next drought in the middle
In stark contrast to the year that was 2022 and hopefully more of the same this year, I was recently interviewed about the 2017-2020 drought for a segment on agricultural weather extremes in Bush Journal. Rather than put too much emphasis on the mental, emotional and physical strain that time had on lives across Australia's eastern seaboard, I preferred to focus on lessons learned.
View From the Paddock: Filling up ag's toolbox
Some of us are lucky enough to be born on the land and grow up with an inherent attachment to agriculture, whether we decide to pursue it as a career or not. One of the wonderful things about agriculture in today's world climate is how attractive it has become to our urban friends as a very promising career path. Go us! Look at how we've marketed our industries! But... and there's always a but...
