Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Radio host.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes.

How is social media changing news?

By turning immediacy into some kind of Holy Grail.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tough question...and I'm aware there are many more interesting options I can't remember, but right now I would say Mikael Blomkvist.

What does it mean to be a journalist?

To be the hunter and carrier of facts and information.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

There's not a preferred way.

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Word, Excel, WordPress, Paint, Filmora.

What's your favorite social network?

Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

Elon Musk.

Why did you become a journalist?

Because I wanted to learn how to know more about the depths of my nation's reality. And how to properly reveal it to the public.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

Nope. Far from writing any type of journalistic piece, I actually wrote a lot of poems in high school.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

Feeling proud of a story you worked on is kind of narcissistic and over-rated.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Facts are more interesting than narratives.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Any time.

What's the best pitch you ever got?

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

A story about a really old man who was doing exercises as a kid. The way I got pitched was extremely ambiguous.

What's your favorite drink?

Here's a pretty predictable answer: Whiskey.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

In the city's depths.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

I love reading Semana's Salud Hernandez, as well as The New Yorker's David Remnick, NR's Jonah Goldberg and El Pais' Vargas Llosa.

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

That it's too serious.
