Interview

What was your first job as a journalist?

Expedition Portal

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Tintin

What does it mean to be a journalist?

For me, being a journalist is about staying curious, looking beyond the obvious. In overlanding, sharing the whole story—not just the pretty views, but the breakdowns too, the people one meets, and the quiet moments in between—means being honest about the experience, even when that means messy, and helping others see that journey for what it really is.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

Email

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Slack, Google Workspace, Grammarly, Adobe Lightroom, onX, Zoom, Asana, Wordpress, Microsoft Office, LinkedIn, ChatGPT

Who do you wish followed you?

Elon Musk

Why did you become a journalist?

It granted me a feeling of liberation and a platform to share my ideas and thoughts with others.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

No, unfortunately our school did not have a newspaper

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

A story in progess on the realities behind the glossy image of vanlife and overlanding. Lots of people see the freedom and the fame on social media, but few speak about the sacrifices that come with it: financial strain, instability, pressure to stay relevant, and how easily the love of travel can become performance. I wanted to tell the human side of it: the burnout, the beauty, and the truth that freedom isn't always easy. It is the most important and honest story I have ever tried to tell.

When's the best time to pitch you?

Anytime of the day

What's the worst pitch you ever got?

None

What's your favorite drink?

Frosted orange juice

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

On a trail in my Land Rover Defender 130

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

The Explorers Club magazine

What's the most common misperception about your beat?

Overlanding often appears idyllic from the outside, but the reality is that it’s demanding to live every day — and even more challenging to document authentically along the way.
