HALLOWEEN KILLS Itself
There is a simple formula to suspense. William Archer said that drama and its subsidiary forms boil down to “anticipation mingled with uncertainty.” That is to say, the resolution of a scene cannot allow itself to be augured by the viewer; if the viewer can predict the outcome, it carries no tension. For example, let’s say you go to the grocery store.
The Unoriginal Originality of MALIGNANT
James Wan’s latest, MALIGNANT, is a unique outing in the context of the filmmaker’s output to date. Wan bears responsibility for incepting two of the biggest horror franchises ever: the SAW and THE CONJURING universes. Both, horrifically enough, have remained animated long after their mortality as films would dictate. Wan admittedly has a talent for franchising, taking low budget high concepts into the realm of absurdly profitable entertainment—it’s no easy task and I’m not knocking him for it.
Pureflix, Irony, and the R-Rated Faith Film
I had the privilege of seeing the newest “faith-based” film from evangelical production company Pure Flix this past weekend—it is, predictably, an amateurish effort (to put it mildly).
