Economic Crime Levy
HMRC have recently updated their guidance on the Economic Crime Levy (‘ECL’), which is due to be introduced later this year. This annual levy is being introduced to fund the Economic Crime Plan – the government’s strategy to tackle economic crimes such as fraud, money laundering, terrorist financing, bribery and corruption – and is aimed at businesses who are supervised under the Money Laundering Regulations and whose UK revenue is at least £10.2 million a year. Who will pay the levy?
Radio Skid Row 2020
At a time when communities are having long-overdue conversations about white supremacy and navigating the challenges of COVID-19, the need to build and properly resource independent and resilient communities is greater than ever before. Throughout this period, Radio Skid Row’s role within the media sector has become more crucial, while facing our toughest challenges yet. Radio Skid Row first went to air in 1982 with test broadcasts to Long Bay Jail. We got our broadcast licence in 1983.
WestCONnex dirty secrets exposed – Wendy Bacon
By Wendy Bacon and Luke Bacon Introduction This story is part of our series on air pollution in Sydney. Our focus is on WestConnex. Like others in the series, this story suggests that the WestConnex Environmental Impact Statement air quality is not a reliable indicator of PM levels, now or in the future. This has implications for the health risks analysis which relies on the air quality EIS. These and other studies were the basis for the Minister's approval.

Our submission to the Inquiry into procedures for counting and reporting the vote in a division
If you follow this blog, or our projects like OpenAustralia.org.au or They Vote For You, you’ll know that we work hard to increase peoples’ access to information about what goes on in Parliament. We recently wrote about problems with the way votes are recorded. The lack of a complete record of voting makes it really hard for you to find out what your elected representatives do on your behalf. This problem needs to be fixed.

There’s no better way to learn how easy FOI requests are than to make one
Most people I speak to about making Freedom of Information requests think it’s too difficult to waste time on—it’s for lawyers, not them. When I’ve seen our FOI system presented in a teaching context, the clear message is ‘FOI is too hard, too slow, and too expensive’. The message has sunk in, including with journalists, lawyers, researchers, and activists, many of whom have decided not to worry with it.
WestConnex: Mike Baird's Tunnel Of Big Corporate Love - New Matilda
The company contracted to assess environmental impacts of a controversial WestConnex tunnel proposed for the Inner West of Sydney has deep interests in the planning and construction of the $15 billion motorway project, raising questions about the independence and integrity of the planning assessment process.
Salvos Worried About Nauru Chaos
Leaked documents from the Nauru processing facility reveal the early chaos of Australia’s controversial offshore detention centre. Salvation Army Operations Meeting Minutes from 12 September 2012 to 21 September 2012 show the Salvation Army’s own views about the management of the facility. The documents, which were obtained by New Matilda and Detention Logs, reveal: From the very first day’s meeting it’s clear the Salvation Army faced problems in Nauru.

They Vote For You
The majority disagreed that the Minister for Trade and Investment and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade should give members of Parliament access to the draft text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement. Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson had proposed this. The Australian Parliament will not be able to see the final text of the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement until after it is signed.
