Insulating Against Economic Uncertainty
With the growing economic uncertainty, it’s understandable to have concerns about the insulation industry or the building and construction market, but like a batt of fibrous insulation or a roll of flexible foam, the insulation industry always springs right back. The building and construction market is so diverse that just saying the market is “up” or “down” doesn’t paint the whole picture.
U.S. population aging as nation turns 250
WASHINGTON — The nation turns 250 this year and Americans’ median age — the age at which half of the population is younger and half is older — continues to rise, climbing from 39.2 in 2024 to 39.4 in 2025, according to population estimates released April 9 by the U.S. Census Bureau. One striking shift is that while women continued to outnumber men at older ages, the gap between the sexes narrowed in the past 25 years. In 2001, there were 70.6 males for every 100 females age 65 and older.
Women Still Outnumbered Men Among the Oldest, but Gap is Narrowing
"Mortality rates for older men have been decreasing faster than for women and, as a result, men's share of the older population has increased," said Marc Perry, senior demographer in the U.S. Census Bureau’s Population Division. "But the mortality gap between men and women is still there.
Decreases in Net International Migration Slowed Population Growth Across the Country
When international migration slowed between 2024 and 2025, states throughout the country felt it, particularly those that relied on it most heavily for growth. The top half of Figure 3 contrasts sharply with the bottom half (2024-2025): every blue bar for NIM shrank, some significantly. Because of reduced international migration, population gain from NIM was the largest component of change in only 30 states and D.C., down from 40 states and D.C. the year before.

Listed and Labeled: How Two Little Words Are Making Big Waves in Building Codes
As of 2024, every major mechanical building code now requires insulation for ducts and/or piping in a plenum to be “listed” and “labeled.” Owners, engineers, and other specifiers are making changes to their HVAC and plumbing insulation specifications, and building code inspectors are taking a closer look at insulation, while the contractor or installer is a bit caught in the middle.
4 Key Wingsuit Skills
Instability issues and spins often start with a poorly executed exit. A clean exit sets your angle of attack and proximity with other wingsuiters from the start, and often for the rest of the flight. For beginners: take an athletic stance at the door. Once you’ve spotted the DZ, give your friend the nod, count it out, and enter the airflow — think of it like diving into a wave at the beach. Avoid over-arching or exiting chest high, which can land you a date with the rear wing.
Corrosion under Insulation: Sources and Symptoms, and How to Safeguard Your Systems
Metal surfaces (like a pipe, tank, or piece of equipment) can corrode in the presence of moisture. When that moisture is trapped in or under insulation and against the surface of the metal, it creates conditions favorable to developing corrosion under insulation (CUI). CUI is a significant and very expensive problem in the oil, gas, chemical, and industrial sectors.

Explaining empirical dynamic modelling using verbal, graphical and mathematical approaches
1 INTRODUCTION Population forecasts are widely used to provide advice to natural resource managers and to understand how ecosystems might respond to a changing environment. They are usually made by prescribing a mathematical model to describe the system, fitting the model to data to estimate parameters and iterating the model forward in time, possibly under a range of future scenarios.

Art under attack: Censorship, cuts, and capitalist crisis
Last month, Arts Council England (ACE) cautioned that funding could be withdrawn for organisations that produce “overtly political or activist” works. This announcement was met with sharp backlash. Subsequently, ACE has released a series of statements explaining that their intention was only to “manage risk” with “good risk assessments”, rather than dictate output. Yet this is all a little too late.

Fall of the Fringe: Capitalism’s crisis in culture | Socialist Appeal
This August saw the return of Edinburgh’s famous, long-running Fringe festival. Over the years, since its inception decades ago, the world renowned event has become a hellscape for working-class artists aiming to ‘make their break’. Emerging in 1947 alongside the city’s International Festival, which focuses on ‘high art’ such as opera, the pioneers of the Fringe took aim at the blatant elitism in the arts.
Age Heaping in the 2020 Census Demographic and Housing Characteristics File (DHC)
Estimated reading time: 7 minutes Most people know their own birthday, and even the date of birth for their immediate family members, but what about their roommate’s or neighbor’s age and date of birth? When people do not know someone’s exact age, they often guess ages that end in 0 or 5. For example, they are more likely to say that someone is 45 or 50 rather than 46 or 49.
Domestic Outmigration From Some Urban Counties Slowed, Smaller Gains in Rural Counties
These patterns are more evident in the accompanying dot-density map for 2022, where each green dot represents a net gain of 100 domestic migrants and a red dot represents a net loss of 100 domestic migrants. In the northeast corridor, particularly around Washington, D.C., New York, and Boston, there are pockets of red — these are generally urban areas that traditionally experience net domestic outmigration.
Florida fastest-growing state for first time since 1957
After decades of rapid population increase, Florida now is the nation’s fastest-growing state for the first time since 1957, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s Vintage 2022 population estimates. Florida’s population increased by 1.9% to 22,244,823 between 2021 and 2022, surpassing Idaho, the previous year’s fastest-growing state. Florida’s percentage gains since 1946 have been impressive: its 2022 population is just over 9 times its 1946 population of 2,440,000.
New Florida Estimates Show Nation’s Third-Largest State Reaching Historic Milestone
Why hasn’t Florida been the country's fastest-growing state in any other year since 1957? In a word — Nevada. Florida's percentage gains since 1946 have been impressive: its 2022 population is just over 9 times its 1946 population of 2,440,000. But Nevada's increases are even higher. Its 2022 population of 3,177,772 is a stunning 22 times its 1946 population of 143,000. For 36 of the 76 years since 1946, Nevada has held the top spot.
Where the babies are booming: birthrates vary from state to state
Birth rates vary from state to state One more birth means one more person. Therefore, that births would be one of the primary drivers of U.S. population growth seems to be a deceptively simple conclusion. However, why, how, and where births contribute to the U.S. population growth varies from state to state. There were almost 4 million births between July 1, 2014, and June 30, 2015, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates.
Adapting Population Estimates to Address COVID-19 Impacts on Data Availability
By now, it is well known that the COVID-19 pandemic significantly delayed the availability of 2020 Census data. One program that depends on these data is the Population Estimates Program (PEP) for which the most recent census serves as the starting point for the next 10 years of our annual population estimates.
Domestic migration plays larger role in population growth of many counties in recent years
Domestic migration’s role as the main driver of population change intensified between 2016 and 2021, resulting in population gains in some counties and declines in others. New population estimates for July 1, 2021, allow us to look at recent trends in county population change. Natural change (the difference between births and deaths), domestic migration and international migration all contribute to how an area’s population changes over time.
Domestic Migration Plays Larger Role in Population Growth of Many Counties in Recent Years
Luke Rogers and Kristie Wilder Domestic migration’s role as the main driver of population change intensified between 2016 and 2021, resulting in population gains in some counties and declines in others. Population estimates for July 1, 2021, released today allow us to look at recent trends in county population change. During this period (2020-2021), more than half of counties (58%) gained population; domestic migration was the major component of change in 90% of them.
COVID-19, Declining Birth Rates and International Migration Resulted in Historically Small Population Gains
Net International Migration at Lowest Levels in Decades Travel restrictions during the pandemic had a significant impact on international migration, according to July 1, 2020-June 30, 2021 estimates out today.
Population Estimates at the Start of the Decade
Estimated reading time: 11 minutes The start of each decade at the U.S. Census Bureau is marked by the collection and release of census data, providing a fresh account of the size and characteristics of the U.S. population. These updated population numbers enable researchers, community planners and others to use the most current data in their work. We at the Census Bureau’s Population Estimates Program (PEP) count ourselves among these data users.

How to digitalise MSL teams for increased efficiency
Medical Science Liaison (MSL) teams in the pharma industry were already at the limit pre-Covid. Products were complex, wider engagement from healthcare professionals (HCPs) was expected as standard, and Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) that MSLs needed to engage were time pressed. Now, due to Covid-shortened timelines, the pressure is intensifying.
What Do We Know About the Quality of 2020 Census Redistricting Data?
Today, the U.S. Census Bureau released the 2020 Census redistricting data that provide the first detailed counts and characteristics of the population for local geographies. The 2020 Census encountered numerous data collection and operational challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic — challenges that raised concern from key stakeholders and demographic experts over the quality of the data.
Shift in Working-Age Population Relative to Older and Younger Americans
The surge in the number of Americans aged 65 and older this decade has outpaced the growth in the working-age population. In counties across the United States, the dependency ratio has increased, according to U.S. Census Bureau population estimates released today. Over the last decade, the growth of the non-working-age (dependent) population – ages 0 to 14 and 65 and older – has outpaced the growth of the working-age population.

Median Age Doesn’t Tell the Whole Story
Counties Can Have the Same Median Age But Very Different Population Distributions Luke Rogers | Component ID: #ti488974963 The nation’s median age was 38.2 in 2018, up from 37.2 in 2010, but new county population characteristics released by the U.S. Census Bureau today show that age is more than a number. Two or more counties can have the same median age — the point when half the population is older and half younger — yet have age profiles of their populations that are completely different.

A graph-convolutional neural network model for the prediction of chemical reactivity
We present a supervised learning approach to predict the products of organic reactions given their reactants, reagents, and solvent(s). The prediction task is factored into two stages comparable to manual expert approaches: considering possible sites of reactivity and evaluating their relative likelihoods.

Heavy sea louse infection is associated with decreased stomach fullness in wild juvenile sockeye salmon
To assess the extent to which our prey density estimates were representative of the prey field met by the juvenile sockeye salmon (O. nerka) when they had been feeding, we needed to determine how quickly juvenile sockeye digested their prey. To accomplish this, we performed a small feeding experiment at a floating field facility composed of several floating docks and net pens.
